It has been 3 years since Darien Brockington released his debut album, Somebody To Love. The Durham, North Carolina based singer has been through some things since his debut including a time where he quit music in its entirety. Many wondered where he had been until he began touring with the Grammy Nominated, Foreign Exchange in December 2008. Now Darien has given us his mixtape, The Cold Case Files, an appetizer of sorts in preparation to the main course, his 2nd album titled Affected: The Story of John Doe which is due out in 2010.
The Cold Case Files is true to its title. The mixtape is a collection of music that Darien has accumulated over the years. The journey begins in February 2007, a few months after Darien’s debut release. It then continues on to the pivotal moment where he decides to quit music altogether. And ends full circle in December 2008, where Darien finds total clarity. The first track, “Welcome To My World” is a perfect starting point. It signifies the beginning of his renewed hunger for making music and the importance of stay true to himself.
Was afraid, was afraid of what they thought if I had changed
But the truth is nothing stays the same
Had to take the chance and do it my way..
There is an array of cool, smooth and sexy songs to satisfy D-Brock fans. For example, “Let’s Make Love (2nite)”, “Addiction” and “Compass” which uses lyrics like:
Lay back and close your eyes
Where we’re going we don’t need luggage baby
I’ll be your pilot, let my love take you high…..
I’ll use your body as a compass
Personal favorites include “Meet Me In Paris” where Darien shows diversity on this guitar driven track, the great vibe of “Fashionista”, slow and sexy “Girl It’s You” and the oh so soulful “Beautiful”. Another notable track is “I Don’t Miss You No More” which features another North Carolina based artist, Sincere. The song is a follow up to the highly favorited song “I Miss You” from Brockington’s Somebody To Love.
Be on the lookout for a few hidden tracks including one by Honey Soul who came out of retirement just to interview Darien. Listen as Darien explains what he went through the last few years, what he’s up to now and an exclusive preview of his album, Affected: The Story of John Doe.
While there are tracks you will “love”, there are some tracks you may just “like” but all in all, The Cold Case Files is a wonderful prelude to the great things to come from Darien Brockington in 2010!
