Dessy Di Lauro asks “Why You Raggin’?”

Dessy Di Lauro has released her first video for, her 2nd album “Jumpin N Jivin’ Live @ The Swing House”.  The video “Why You Raggin'” is the visualization of the song, which won Hollywood Media In MusicAward for Best R&B/Soul Song.  The style of the music and video are from the combination of James Johnson, Cab Calloway, a bit of R&B and a helping of funk.

Kawan Debose is “Exposed” Mixtape

Kawan Debose has released his new mixtape “Exposed”.  This is his first project after his album “Vintage Soul”, which was released in 2009.  Kawan is in a special class that wears three hats, as writer, producer, and thankfully singer.  On this mixtape, there is a great collection of songs, that will show you his talents of all three.

There are a few songs that standout to me.  First would be his version of Adore You, by Prince.  Not many people can pull off a Prince song, but Kawan does it well. Second would be “Rolling In the Deep”, which has been a song made popular by Adele on her album “21”.  he is able to added a additional depth and emotion to it that, wasn’t present before.  Most importantly, the song “Crazy”, which is from “Vintage Soul”. It really shows his range.

Now all these great songs are packaged nicely, and available to you for FREE.  So, you have no reason not to pick this up and enjoy what Kawan Debose has to offer you. You will be surprised and pleased.

Nakia Henry lets loose her “Love Letter”

Nakia Henry has joyously released her video “Love Letter” on VH1 Soul.   This is the first video from her album “Remember Me“.  If you don’t know, that’s a big deal.  She has other videos in the pipeline, which is great for her fans.  Enjoy.

Let The Love Come from Arinmaya

I think that it is very fitting that the lovely Arinmaya is the first artist that I spotlight on my return on Soulified.  She was the last artist that was interviewed and spotlighted in January.  She has been busy in that time, and is bringing us goodies and treats.  She is getting ready to release her 2nd album “Let The Love Come”, which is an acoustic album.  It is being released June 14th, and you can pre-order it now.

This album consists of nine songs that truly let you hear, feel and embrace the emotion that she releases from her voice.  Also you get the bonus of hearing Nick Cassarino.  He performs on many of the songs.  With the two of them bringing there talents together, the listener should be humbled.  One of my favorites of the album is  “Love’s In Need Of Love Today”, which is awesome version of Stevie Wonder’s song.  I could go on and on gushing over each song, but in that time you could have listen to some of it by now. So, head over and check it out and pre-order.

Interview With Avery*Sunshine

TwitterMySpaceOfficial Website

Today we have the great blessing to speak with Avery*Sunshine and understand a little bit more about her wonderful voice, talent and positivity.  With the release of her debut album last summer, she has brought an energy to the genre, that was lacking in my opinion.  You can gather that vibe from her music, watching her perform or just hearing her in a voicemail. (Which I had the pleasure to receive, I will never delete):)  Anyway, if you haven’t picked up the album please do, and give yourself a treat.  Also, if you are in the Memphis, she will be performing at The Vine this Saturday January 15th.  You know I will be there.

Soulified: With the release of your debut album last summer, how has your career changed?

Avery*Sunshine: We are definitely a lot busier!!! The album helps to increase awareness.

Soulified: What was the message that you were trying to convey to your fans with that album?

Avery*Sunshine: I wanted to encourage people to not be afraid of honesty. I hope that my honesty and “realness” (That word is not in the dictionary lol) encourages others to be honest and real. From that honesty will flow healing and from that healing will flow “SHINEABILITY”: the ability to SHINE! . (I made that word up too.) ;)

Soulified: As each song is an intimate creation of talent, heart and soul, what song had the most meaning to you on this album, if you had to narrow one down?

Avery*Sunshine: They are all very meaningful to me. If I’d have to pick,  I’d choose UGLY.  From that tune we were able to create an album. The vocals on that tune were recorded in my closet!!!!

Soulified: I really enjoyed your video “All In My Head”. What songs are next to make the transitions to a music video?  Why was that one picked to be the first?

Avery*Sunshine: Thank you! We thought that the story of ALL IN MY HEAD would visually be interesting. We hope that it was! I GOT SUNSHINE and PININ’ will be next!

Soulified: I love that you are touring, even to the smaller cities like Memphis. How has the experience been for you?

Avery*Sunshine: The touring experience is very close to my heart. I am privileged to have the opportunity to travel the world doing what I love to do. BLESSED.

Soulified: Since you gave your fans such a great album last summer, what are you plans for the next album?

Avery*Sunshine: First of all, THANK YOU. Secondly, the thought of creating another album is TERRIFYING but a feat we intend to take on nonetheless!!! We, my music partner Dana Johnson and I, plan to write from our hearts again and see what happens. Wherever God leads, we’re gonna follow!  Can’t go wrong that way. I’d like to have a few guest artists on the album too. (We’ll let you know if Prince agrees!!!) I’M KIDDING!!! well… ;)

Soulified: I can tell by your music, videos and just how you carry yourself. How do you keep your positive nature and outlook?

Avery*Sunshine: Prayer. My family. My friends. Music. Getting rest when I need it and being adamant about having personal time to “re-up”.

Soulified: With the growth of twitter and facebook as ways for artists to connect directly with the fans, what method do you prefer and what was the most surprising thing that you have noticed about the increased fan connection?

Avery*Sunshine: I am both a Twitter and Facebook junkie. When I first started, I was surprised that people were actually interested in the seemingly mundane things that I was doing!!! Now I realize that the social networks allow artists to have the necessary connection with the people who help to make the artists who they are. I was not a fan initially. Now, I’M SOLD!!!!

Soulified: So what are you plans for your music in 2011?

Avery*Sunshine: We intend to continue  our touring to further increase awareness about the project. Of course we’ll be making more music too. ;)

Soulified: Thank your for your time, and best wishes.

Avery*Sunshine: Thank you Eric for your interest!!!  I’m Honored!

Direction Of Soulified

As you may have noticed lately that things have kinda of slowed down on the site.  With the holidays, my two other jobs and just less time available for me to spend like I did this summer, I’ve had to think about what do I want to do with Soulified.  Then to have the shocker that  SoulUK has decided to suspend operations for now.  I’ve really wanted to make the right move. I’ve have thought about it, and want to get Soulified, back to it’s roots.  At the start of the blog, almost two years ago I wanted to expose the unknown or unsigned Soul artist.  After trying to push growth on the site, and have a Facebook page, twitter, Tumblr and so forth, it all gets diluted.

I’m not going to try to keep abreast of every single release, video debut, rumor of a new album that’s upcoming, or award shows.  It makes me smile more to expose someone to Cilla K or Nakia Henry, than post a news snippet about a upcoming video or who won what award.  There are a lot of choices for music news, and I’m not going to try to run the same stories that you can see on five other sites.  You want each of the sites you visit to be something unique and worthwhile.  So each week, I will focus Soulified on ONE Soul artist.  In that week, I will have a bio, interview, showcase of their videos, albums, singles and hopefully a give away.  I think that way you get a much more complete view of the artist, and not just a snapshot.  So, there will be 52 artists showcased and detailed, this coming year. Hopefully it will be an artist that is new to you or you may discover something new about an old favorite.

I hope that you can understand my choice to take Soulified, in this direction and continue to visit for your Soul music needs.  Thank you and Enjoy.

Khristopher Lamont Releases “Change”

Website/Twitter/Facebook/Youtube/CD Baby

Was just put on to this talented artist, Kristopher Lamont.  When I say this voice is out of the blue, I really mean out the blue.  I’m a little partial to my female Soul artists, but listening to Kristopher’s voice has show me that there is hope on the male front.  One main aspect I love about his voice, is that it conveys such power and feeling.  There is meaning behind each verse.  As if you were to peel back a layer or two, you would find some happiness, joy or sadness that he is pulling from, to give each verse it’s emotion.

Anyway, he has just dropped his debut single “Change”, and it’s here for you to listen.  His debut album is scheduled to appear Spring of 2011. So, check him out, spread the word and enjoy some “Change”.

Lee Reveals His Gift in “Naked”

Lee? Yes, Lee.  Don’t know him?  Let me introduce you.  Lee is a an artist that has no definitions or genres that bind him.  He is a everything from a singer to poet to songwriter to rapper.  The reason I’m introducing you to Lee, is not just because of his new album “Naked”, that is to be released on October 26th.  It’s also to introduce you to an artist that has a body of work that allows you to draw from, and then listen to “Naked” with a reflection of how Lee arrived at this point musically.

Before his solo career, Lee was the front person for the band The Square Egg that was formed in 1999 in Miami.  The band members included Lee with lead vocals, Mike Rens (bass player), Woody Quinn (guitarist), Jim Antonucci (saxophone), Russ Kleiner (drummer), Pete Clagett(trumpet), Rick Parker(trombone), Pat Firth (keyboards), and background singers Kristen Maxfield and Carol Brevard-Stern.   This awesome collection of talent released four recordings which were:

Quite Possibly The Best Of Square Egg (2005)

Things Change (2005)

The Wooden Tongue (2004)

Songs To Live By (2004)

Here is a sample of their music.

Now, in 2008 Lee released his first solo album “Meet Lee (2008)“. This solo project set the fertile soil for the creative seed that bears fruit in the new album “Naked”.  It was a 17 songs that really talents and the breadth of his reach musically.  That’s another thing about Lee, that I truly admire.  He gives you an album.  Not a 6 or 8 song sampling, but a full album.  His new album has 22 songs. When is the last time you picked up an album that wasn’t a greatest hits or mixtape what had 22 songs? Was it Prince’s B Sides release? :)  Yes, it’s been that long.

To help spread the word of the new album’s release he has two singles.  The first is “Alone” and then “? (Love)“. Out of the two, my favorite is “? (Love)”.  Both should hold you till the album is released on the Tuesday, the 26th.  Also while you’re waiting, check out the previous albums and take the time understand and appreciate Lee and The Square Egg.  It will make the enjoyment of “Naked” so much more pleasant.

Introducing Mahasin’s Single “Meet Me On The Dance Floor”

Wow. Just had a revelation.  You can’t have sultry Soul and mellow songstresses all the time. You must have some upbeat and vibrant music for those times you need that energy.  What helped me come to this revelation? It was Mahasin’s new album, “Party Life”. This is the first that I have heard of her, but I’m glad that I have.  As her second album, which was released on September 14th, it’s very energetic and stands out from the R&B club type music.  It has a another layer of deepth, that the others lack. The synopsis given for the album is

“‘Party Life’ is a conceptual DJ friendly album that takes place in every urban scene on the planet Earth! It’s based on ‘Tell Me (feat. Nigel Bennett) from Mahasin’s previous album ‘Wind It Up!’.”

The first single is “Meet Me On The Dance Floor”, which has a smidge MJ feel to it, which can never be bad.  Need a song to get you moving in the  morning, this is it.  You can visit her BandCamp page and sample the whole album before you pick it up.  So, far I like what I hear, and this is from Mr. Mellow and relaxed. lol.  Enjoy.

Nakia Henry Releases “Love Letter”

Nakia Henry is an artist that is new to me, and maybe to you also. She has just released a single, titled “Love Letter (He Wants Me To Win)”.  This is after she released “Remember Me” last year.  It was her debut album, that as she states the purpose,  “intending to reunite the self with the Self“.  That’s a very profound statement, and something you don’t find every day.  It also gives you insight into the music that Nakia Henry creates, and wants to share with the world.  For example, this single “Love Letter (He Wants Me To Win)”, has some earthy and also astral aspects at the same time.  It’s a great love story, that details the support, uplifting, and positivity of love that can exist in a relationship.  Her soft infliction filled voice, blends perfectly with the song.  You have to take a moment, to listen to the song and hear what her voice is saying, not her words.  That’s when you will get the true feeling of the song. Also, “Love Letter Part 2” is on it’s way. Enough of my ramblings, listen to the song and see for yourself.

An Interview with Conya Doss

Conya Doss was able to take some time out of busy schedule to answer a few questions about her and the recent release “Blu Transition“.  The album is great and gives fans the hit they need to carry on.  As a long time fan, I’m very pleased and now can’t wait for the next one. :)  Enjoy the interview. Album review is coming shortly.

Soulified: If you had 4 words to describe music, what would they be?

Conya Doss: Smooth, soulful, heartfelt, and raw.

Soulified: Why did you choose this time to act on your inspirations to create Blu Transition?

Conya Doss: It just came naturally, I do this for every record, all is just contingent on what I am experiencing during that given time.

Soulified: Who are some of your musical influences?

Conya Doss:Bonnie Raitt, Nina Simone, Stevie Wonder, Donnie Hathaway, Prince, Angela Winbush, Michelle N’Degeocello, list goes on and on.

Soulified: What is your favorite track off of the new album, and why does it stand above the rest?

Conya Doss: “Never Be The Same” because it speaks of my whole experience this past year with regards to the birth of my son Blu.  Life as I knew it will never be the same, in a great way of course.

Soulified: With the other people that worked with you on this album, who had the biggest impact?

Conya Doss: Rodney Jones, Myron Davis, Jayshawn, James Blaque, they all had something special to offer, with no one making an impact more than the other.

Soulified: How do you keep in balance the fight for creative control with the chance for major label success?

Conya Doss: It’s a constant struggle; I’d rather hold on to my creativity, I love music too much to compromise it.  However, it would be great to have “the machine” behind you.  An ideal situation would be a partnership, but that’s rare.

Soulified: Continuing with the previous question, how would you define success?

Conya Doss: When a supporter approaches me and tells me how much my music has inspired his or her life in one way or another, I have succeeded in reaching someone with my god given gift.

Soulified: Do you have a tour planned? If so what cities are on the list?

Conya Doss: Washington, Cleveland, Columbus, Toledo, Detroit, Birmingham, new york, and hopefully more to add.

Soulified: What tunes are currently in heavy rotation that you jam to?

Conya Doss: Anthony Hamilton’s album “Ain’t No Body Worrying” and all of Raphael Saadiq’s latest joints.

Soulified: Thank you for your time. Is there anything else you would like to tell our readers?

Conya Doss: Thanks for taking the time to listen to my music and visit my website www.conyadoss.com

Thanks Sweetlocs, for the great questions and your effort.

Conya Doss Set to Release “Blu Transition”

Website/Facebook/MySpace/Twitter

Conya Doss is set to release another album to her waiting fans on September 28th, 2010.  This album took me by surprise.  I have been a long time Super Fan of her.  She was my first serious venture in to Soul/Neo Soul music.  This will be her fifth album, in a long line of great albums.  This album is to be a more emotional and deeper album based on recent events in her life. The album is named after her newborn son, Blu.  So I can’t wait to hear how she wraps her subtle, yet gripping voice around these songs.

You can pre-order this album at many places, but the best place is from her site.  If you want to really support an independent artist, thats the best way.  To help get youhyped up for the release here are three snippets to help your three week wait.

Discover Candice Anitra’s “Bark Than Bite”

Website/MySpace/Facebook

I’ve been enlightened to the voice of Candice Anitra.  An artist from Brooklyn, New York that understands the meaning of being creative.  She has recently released her debut album “Bark Than Bite“.  This album is, plan and simple a journey of her expressions of creativity.  From the first song “Bad Taste”, to one of my favorites “Take Me”, which is the epitome of the  smokey and heavy with sultry sexiness vibe I love.  The simple chords, give her voice all the latitude it needs to envelop you in it’s wisps of mysterious soulness.  Yes, it’s like that.  Then moving on to “Too Much Woman” gives us something similar, with a touch of a astral vibe.  This is the album, that makes me want to drive through some random rainy city at 2:00am, and just reflect upon my day and life.   Then there are more upbeat and positive songs that round out the album to earn it a place in my daily rotation.

Candice Anitra has a refreshing, crisp quality that brings a new perspective to the genre.  This perspective is much needed, at this time that is being called the Golden Time of Soul.  With many artists releasing their long awaited projects this fall, and new artists trying to emulate those artists, that’s where Candice Anitra stands out.  Check out her video below, which is of the song “Objectify”.  Is a wonderful plea from one lover to the next.  Never had this proposition put in such a way. Enjoy.
