Jeremih – All About You (album review/ video/ online listening party by DJ Smoke1)

Mr. Birthday Sex is back with his second album “All About You”.  Soulified now has an official DJ, by the name of DJ Smoke1 .  He will bless your ears with a dope mix of the full album for your listening pleasure, in our very first online listening party before the album drops September 28th, 2010.

Got a chance to listen to the album over the weekend and I can safely say that this one will be added to my ” freak um” list. lol This is a straight baby makin album right here, ya’ll.  In my case and most others out there a “practice making babies” album.  hahaha This was somewhat expected with his hit single “Birthday Sex” on his last album, but it’s a refreshing piece of work. None the less,  every track has a different feel and taste. You can tell Jeremih has def grown and matured as an artist on this one. You get the grown and sexy tracks and even a few good love ballads like Holding On and Love Don’t Change. Another breath of fresh of air on the album is the single “Broken Down”, where Jeremih hits us with a blues style track. It’s about a past bad situation, he was in and he showcase’s his true untouched vocals.

The lead single “I Like” was def a good choice because it’s one of my favorite tracks.  Luda murders it with his bars at the end.  The video is simple and has been done before (on a rented yacht with the homie and video vixen’s drinking bub) but it works for the song.  The eye candy picked totally makes me ignore the unoriginality. The back arch shot during Luda’s part in the jacuzzi OMG! LOL Can’t help but hate a little and wish I was there with the 2 to even the odds. lol Ok ok back to the album. Make sure yall cop it when it drops.  It’s worth the $9.99

Donell Jones- Lyrics (album review/ sneak peek)

“Donell Jones has a new album?!” Those are the words that came to most of your minds when you saw this post right? Well it was for mine when I found out he had an album and I gotta say…It’s about damn time Donell! Only took you 4 years if you don’t count “The Lost Files” album in 2009 which was pretty much lost in music world. lol

So what’s Donell bringing on this album? “This album right here is, to me, the best so far,” says Jones. “I know a lot of artists say that, but I really feel that way. This is one you can play from beginning to end. I like to give a message in the music and I think that with this particular album, I really went into depth about certain situations we find ourselves in. I named it lyrics because from the very start of my career, that’s what I’ve tried to build on, writing strong lyrics and making sure that whatever I put out there, people can understand.” That’s some pretty big and confident talk considering his 1999 platinum selling album “Where I Wanna Be” is my all time favorite and in my mind a flawless album from start to finish. Hell my wedding song is on that album and I’m not even married yet. lol

Listening to the first two tracks right off the bat I can say he’s not off to a good start “rap singing” on the #1 The World Is Yours with way to much talking in the beginning of both tracks totally killing the it for me like a mixtape dj basically explaining how he’s back and the R&B needs him.  He even has his mama talking on #2 Your Place. Ewww. His first and probably only single off the album #3 Love Like This is a chill track with a decent video till Donell takes his hat and glasses off. lol Whoa! Donell got dome!!!! And I’ve seen prettier love interest in Walmart.

“Love Like This”

httpvh://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Zk1R8XrqaM&p=13DA3DEFA2450E49&playnext=1&index=32

The talking continues on track 4, 8, 9, 10, 11, and 13! Just sing Donell! Your killing the songs. We don’t need introductions! Speaking of #10 You Can Burn Donell introduces one of his first artist signed to his “record label” Candy Man by the name of Breeze who’s a female singer that can’t sing worth a damn. *shakes head* The album as a whole is a big disappointment to me because I was really hoping Donell would back his words and bless us with an up to date “Where I Wanna Be” but it’s far from that. The production is boo boo especially the uptempo clubby ones. The content isn’t something I don’t wanna hear like strip clubs, tapping married women and sneaking out the Back Door, and ruining a girl life he dated that didnt want to be with him via Blackmailing her for money who’s getting married. Unnecessary auto tune (#5). There are no high notes at all! It’s pretty much soft spoken singing through out. You know an album is bad when Young Joc the best thing about it. Real spit.

John Legend and The Roots- Wake Up! (album review/preview)

When I first heard these 2 music titans were getting together and doing an album together I couldn’t believe it. Well myself and thousands of others are believers now cause it’s finally out and the album is a beast! If you thought the Jay-Z/ Linkin Park Collision Course album was nuts this album is a must by.

Soulful singer John Legend & the baddest band in all the land The Roots present Wake Up!, and if you think that this dream team of a combination looks good I can assure you it sounds even better! This album is packed with 12  songs pulled from the soulful music of the 60’s and 70’s all with a theme of awareness, engagement and consciousness all blessed by John’s voice and the Roots instrumentation/ lyrics. The album is highlighted with familiar tracks like “Little Ghetto Boy” by Donny Hathaway mixed with more obscure selections like Baby Huey and the Babysitters’ “Hard Times” which is my cut. Wake Up! also includes one original composition, John Legend’s “Shine,” which is featured in the documentary Waiting For Superman.

From the very start of the album this killer combo comes out of the gate’s full blast with a loud, soulful, live, hard hitting sound that you can’t help but get excited and bob your head too with “Hard Times.”  This track is probably one of my favorite because it’s the perfect combo of John’s high notes, The Roots instrumentation and Black Thought lyrics. I had to bless yall with a live in studio performance of it which gives you one hell of an idea as to how they all recorded this album which makes sense as to why it’s so live! I swear if you closed your eyes with the volume all the way up you’d swear John and the Roots were playing live right in front of you. It’s that live yall.

Discover Candice Anitra’s “Bark Than Bite”

Website/MySpace/Facebook

I’ve been enlightened to the voice of Candice Anitra.  An artist from Brooklyn, New York that understands the meaning of being creative.  She has recently released her debut album “Bark Than Bite“.  This album is, plan and simple a journey of her expressions of creativity.  From the first song “Bad Taste”, to one of my favorites “Take Me”, which is the epitome of the  smokey and heavy with sultry sexiness vibe I love.  The simple chords, give her voice all the latitude it needs to envelop you in it’s wisps of mysterious soulness.  Yes, it’s like that.  Then moving on to “Too Much Woman” gives us something similar, with a touch of a astral vibe.  This is the album, that makes me want to drive through some random rainy city at 2:00am, and just reflect upon my day and life.   Then there are more upbeat and positive songs that round out the album to earn it a place in my daily rotation.

Candice Anitra has a refreshing, crisp quality that brings a new perspective to the genre.  This perspective is much needed, at this time that is being called the Golden Time of Soul.  With many artists releasing their long awaited projects this fall, and new artists trying to emulate those artists, that’s where Candice Anitra stands out.  Check out her video below, which is of the song “Objectify”.  Is a wonderful plea from one lover to the next.  Never had this proposition put in such a way. Enjoy.

Cilla K’s Voice is “Easy To Love” Video Release

MySpace/Twitter/Facebook

Ok, I’m going to have to get some therapy.  Here is Cilla K, a great voice and vibe that I missed, that should have been in my rotation since April, when her debut album “Fine Line” was released.  She recently also released a video “Easy To Love”.  The vibe that  you get from “Easy to Love” is just a sampling of the variety and range that you will experience on the album.  One quality that I enjoy the most, is her ability for her voice to meld with whatever genre she is crafting.  Take a listen.  I hope to have a album review shortly.

Trey Songz- Passion, Pleasure, Pain (album review/ video)

Happy Monday Soulified! How was everyone’s weekend? Got the new Trey Songz album last Friday and have been bumping it all weekend.

I gotta admit the album is a lot better then I thought it was going to be. Trey has definitely matured as an artist because the whole album is very well rounded. And for my dude’s that are looking for a good “beating/ panty droppin” album this is the one! lol I know I’ll def be putting this album on next time I knock some boots. lol Big up’s to Trey for this one. I appreciate it family. hahaha The track list is a little different from the one I posted a few weeks ago in the album sneak peek where all of you can still download and listen to the 6 tracks off the album highlighted below by clicking. The album’s very similar to Dwele’s W.ants W.orld W.omen album in the sense that he broke the album into 3 separate part with the parts relating to the album title’s 3 words. Though Trey’s words aren’t in the right order in his track list as they are in the album title I’m not mad at him for trying and doing it the way he did because it makes the album that much more interesting. Make sure to buy the album tomorrow (Sep 14th) when it drops.

The video for the new single off the album “Can’t Be Friends” and I’m feeling this video big time. It’s a simple concept but it gets the point and lyrics across. More artist should focus on feeling and simplicity when doing video’s because all the crazy graphics and special effects and shit aren’t needed. The song is dope as well cause I feel every word he’s singing on a personal level as I’m sure a lot of you are as well. This cut defiantly leads me to believe that his album will truly be the most personal to date.

Giovanca’s “Everything” From “While I’m Awake” Album

Website/Twitter/Facebook

One of my favorite European artists has released a new album, and video for her second single “Everything”.  The album “While I’m Awake“, her second album after  “Subway Silence“, was released a few months ago.  The reason why I enjoy her music so much, is that she has a very upbeat, positive yet soulful sound.  Sometimes in the the US we have too much deep emotion, and can weigh down the song or even the album.  It’s refreshing to have something a bit lighter, but not where it is reaching the R&B or Pop genres. Anyway, take listen to the video, check out the album and get hooked like me. Enjoy.

Interview With Zo!

Website/Twitter/Foreign Exchange Music

Zo! recently took time out of his busy schedule, to talk with us and share his thoughts on his music and SunStorm. Which was recently released to the world, to great praise.  If you haven’t picked up a copy yet, please do so ASAP.

Soulified

How has the transition to being under the Foreign Exchange Music umbrella been?

Zo!

Around 2005, I met Phonte. Phonte knew of my work and was a fan. On my Re: Define album, I had remix a Little Brother song. From that, our relationship grew and we decided to work together. Our first song together was “Stepping Out” on the Just Visiting album.

Soulified

With your new album SunStorm, what was the motivation for this album, and what was the inspiration for the name itself, it has Roy Ayers feel to the title?

Zo!

This is an auto-biographical piece. From the album cover to every song on the album, it is all me. It is about the ups and downs of my career and life.

Soulified

How do you balance being a music teacher and very active artist?

Zo!

It is tough. You see some artist that work 9 to 5 jobs, it’s tough for them to take a break and tour. My job as a music teacher, you would think they would embrace it. My job puts some pressures on me. My touring is a positive to the kids I teach. It shows them that you can make it and be successful doing music.

Soulified

How did you hook up with Foreign Exchange?

Zo!

Phonte asked me to add something to there live show. And things kept growing after that.

Soulified

I Love the 80’s is a great album, what was the idea behind it?

Zo!

The album came about on a dare. Me and Tay were talking about how bad some of the 80’s music was. This conversation turned into me creating a beat that sounded like “Africa” by Toto. Tay sang over it. And the project bloomed in “I Love the 80’s”. When we did “Take on me”, it was a challenge and dare. We wanted to see if we could create the song and sound good. But we also wanted to see if people would like it.

Soulified

“Overdue Process” with Asylum 7 is a favorite of mine, how did that come about?

Zo!

Asylum has been my boy since 2004. In Detroit, I would go to open mikes. Asylum would be there. And he would be killing them in a freestyle cipher. One day I hit him, we worked on some stuff. In those sessions, we jellied and gained respect for one another. “Overdue Process” was 4-5 years in the making. Asylum love for music is the same as mine. I think that is why we work so well together.

Soulified

When I tell people about u, I say you are an R&B version of Primo.

Zo!

Thanks. To be compared to him is an honor. I’m a huge Primo fan.

Soulified

How did u pick the artist for this project?

Zo!

Everyone, I’m real cool with and fans of. Me and Phonte are so close, I go to him to get a second opinion on beats artist. We went back and forth coming up with who would sound good on this song and that song. It was a shock to me that everyone wanted to be on the album.

Soulified

Jesse Boykins, Eric Roberson, Lady Alma, Sy Smith and Foreign Exchange, I’m happy to see u showcase show indy artists that I’m huge fans of. Explain the studio sessions.

Zo!

These are all my friends on the “Sunstorm” album. Yahzarah voice is so beautiful. She is one of the dopest singers in the music game today. Sy, her voice is so powerful.

Soulified

How was it working with PPP?

Zo!

Dope. The first time me and Wajeed did something, was on the humble. I was at his spot chilling and relaxing. I get to messing around on the Fender Rhodes. Wajeed jumped in and we ended up producing some stuff together. Wajeed is a good friend of mine. He is like a brother to me. I go him to get advance and listen to some of my work.

Soulified

You mentioned this is an album about you. What is the most personal song?

Zo!

All of them. I can’t pick one. They are all about me and things in my life.

Soulified

What would be a dream project for you?

Zo!

Working with Faith Evans would be dope. She puts it down and is very soulful. If I had the resources, I would bring back Zhane. I think they were some what unrated. I would like to see them back.

Soulified

What’s in the future?

Zo!

The Foreign Exchange album in October is up first. And I’m already working on my next album. Hopefully I can put it out next year.

Fantasia- Back to Me (album review/ preview)

Since breaking all that bad news (home wrecker, sex tape, suicide attempt) about Fantasia in a past post I did I thought it would only be fair to break some good new by hitting all of you Fantasia fan’s with a review on her new album as well as a preview of a few select songs that I think are play worry.

Back to Me is the third studio album by Fantasia set for release next week on August 24, 2010. This album will be her first studio album in four freakin years since 2006’s Fantasia. The album’s title was actually suggested to her by comedian Steve Harvey, when Barrino visited his morning radio program. The album was originally set for release in early 2010, but after a wack first single and and a ton of leaks, J Records pretty much said “Damn all this” and ordered more tracks for the album, postponing the album’s release until further studio sessions, and stronger singles were recorded. The project’s new lead single, “Bittersweet” was released to Itunes on May 11, 2010, and was performed live on American Idol, while a new release date was set for July 27, 2010. “Bittersweet” was pretty much wack as hell to and got very little spins on the radio, so the album was again pushed back to August 10, 2010 and finally to August 24, 2010. When the album’s track listing was released in July, several of the leaked songs, including, “Bounce Back”, “Control Freak”, “On & On”, “Without You”, “Never” and “Said I Wouldn’t (No More)”, were scrapped. Ouch!

What up with Fantasia and all this leakage? If it’s not her singles or album its a sex tape or news that she’s knockin boots with a married man then trying to kill herself over it with Asprin of all the drugs. It’s super hard for me to respect her as a woman for all that especially when she has a young daughter so I’m going to make this review short and simple while having a little fun with her track titles. lol

01. I’m Doin’ Me “And a married man”
02. Bittersweet
03. Man Of The House
“But it ain’t his. It’s either mine or his wife’s”
04. Who’s Been Lovin’ You
“Ummm his wife and you apparently.”
05. Collard Greens And Cornbread
“And aspirin”
06. Teach Me
“How to find a single man and not make sex tapes”
07. Move On Me
08. Trust Him
“When he say’s that lady that live with him is just the nanny”
09. The Thrill Is Gone Ft. Cee-Lo Green
“But I recorded it for all to see.”
10. Falling In Love Tonight
“Let’s video tape it and forget the tape in the player.”
11. Even Angels
12. I’m Here (From “The Color Purple” Musical)
“And now on XXX DVD’s and websites world wide”

The album over all is pretty good and very powerful on the vocal, lyrical, hook, and ballet tip even though it’s hard to take anything serious that she’s singing present day and even funny. The heaters on this album are # 1, 2, 7, 9 (my fave). Enjoy listening to my picks and make sure to leave a half a brotha some comments down below.

Fresh from the Fridge: Andre 3000- I Do (single)

Soulified! What it do?! One of my top 3 MC’s Andre 3000 has finally dropped a single for all of our listening pleasure’s and it is one hell of a soulful banger! I’ve had this track for a hot sec and was going to hold off releasing it because Andre’s mixtape that it was suppose be on entitled “Limelight Exlcusives” was scheduled to drop yesterday (August 12th) which it didn’t. I can’t find any word on why it’s been postponed or when it’s going to drop so just gonna go ahead and bless you with the track till I get my hands on it for yall.

The single is ” I Do” And though its a big time tease at only 2:00 long its plenty to make you put this bitch on repeat. Trust! Dre’s lyrics are nuts as usual with a little harmonizing and a dope beat sampled from Lenny Williams “Cause I Love You” track.

Exclusive Bilal Interview

Well family, you heard right, we were blessed with the opportunity to get an exclusive interview with Bilal.  We were one of the few who were allowed to get a sneak peak into whats been up with the brotha and what he has in store with his latest release “Airtights Revenge.” I wont bore you with the shenanigans.  Lets get to the interview…

SOULFIED:

We know that many transitions have been made for you, eventhough you’ve consistently given your fans a genuine sound.  It is what we have come to expect of you.  What changes, if any, would you say took place between Love For Sale and Airtights Revenge

BILAL

This album is more electronic.  Its so much more.  The style of writing and everything was done much differently than previous albums.  From the ground up, the goal was to do landscaping with sounds, so I used a lot more sounds and effects than previous albums.  It is a real progressive album.

SOULIFIED

Tell us a little about Airtights Revenge, what is the meaning behind it and what brought it about?

BILAL

The meaning behind it… It basically started out fast.  Things were moving real fast, and then you know, my album ended up getting shelved.  I was off the label, then there was contracts and all this other bullsh*t.  The silverlining… then I started to see the sunlight come in.  Some people felt like the project I was working on was dark and some people weren’t understanding what I was doing – where I was coming from.  (slight laugh)  Then someone came up to me and told me that this album was the greatest soul record they ever heard in in their life.  I mean, when you get these types of statements, you know, its just.. (satisfying laugh).

So I started to tour and it was like I had an album come out!  The Revenge was what made me who I am today.  It made me stronger.  It made me better.  It made me more of a blues singer, which is what I had always wanted to be from the beginning.  But now I’m more of a blues singer than ever.  Its like some 5 Heartbeats type sh*t. (we both share a laugh).

If I could do it all over again, I wouldn’t change a thing.  I didn’t know any of this would happen, but it did, and everything happens for a reason.

SOULIFIED

So we heard, September 14th.  Is this official?  Is there any significance in the date?

BILAL

The album will definitely be released on the 14th.  Theres no siginificance in the date.

SOULIFIED

Robots is crazy!!!  I personally feel that it would make a great single…  Have you decided on which song will be the initial single?

BILAL

The single will be Restart.  We did a few videos, but the single will be Restart.  I don’t really do singles.   I don’t really get into putting out singles because to me the whole album is hot.  I just go with what feedback I get.

SOULIFIED

What you’ve done for yourself up until now has worked.  Do you plan on going more mainstream?  What direction will your career go?

BILAL

Man I just want to make good music.    I just make music.  I do what I love, which is making music.  I’m not into formulas or anything, just making good music.  If it goes more mainstream then so be it, but I’m gonna keep doing what I love to do.

SOULIFIED

From the feedback I’ve gotten, people want to see more of you.  Where can fans see you performing, or hear you these days?  Do you have a blog or youtube channel?

BILAL

Twitter:  @bilal_oliver

That is the best avenue because I load my videos on there and talk about upcoming shows and things like that.

SOULIFIED

I dont want to get too personal, but the ladies want to know… Is there a Soul Sista on the scene?

BILAL

(brief silence) Hello! – the phone started breaking up – He chimes back in “I’m not doing this on purpose!” (brief laugh)  I do have someone special in my life. (You’re referring to music right…?) (another laugh) Actually, I am in a relationship. ….yeah.  I’m in a relationship right now.   I’m married. (aite aite! I’m not gonna get too much deeper into that. ) (more laughs)

End of Interview

We had to disconnect after that question, so we closed up.  There is so much more I wanted to ask him, as it relates to the details about production and the rest of the Soulquarians.  I also wanted to include questions from some of his fans on our Soulfied twitter page but there just wasn’t enough time.  I’m sure this does wet your appetite though.  This album is looking very promising.

All in all, the brotha seemed very motivated and extremely excited about Airtights Revenge.  I listed below, a few treats that are sure to keep you excited about this one.  Send Bilal a tweet or something to let him know that we appreciate the exlusive interview at soulified.com.  Again, his twitter page is bilal_oliver

Yours truly, still working hard to Keep it alive… Issa

Fresh from the Fridge: J. Cole- The Blow Up (mixtape/video)

Whats up Soulified Nation?! Jay-z’s protege and first signed artist to his label Roc Nation is finally above ground in the mainstream limelight with his two singles “Lights Please”  and his most recent single “Who Dat.” So I’m hitting yall with some new J. Cole heat to get you by till his album “Cole World” drops October 26th of this year. Expect production from Kanye West, No I.D., and Pharrell just to name a few.

I’ve been a J.Cole fan ever since he dropped his first mixtape “The Come Up” in 07 and his second “The Warm Up” in 09 which were both solid mixtapes that felt like album’s. The Blow Up, though not an official mixtape made by J. Cole is solid like his past two with great production, lyrics, new material off the upcoming album and unheard past tracks. And one of the most important things to me in a mixtape…no annoying ass DJ’s f’ing up the mixtape with shout outs and plugs. YES! Let’s just hope that his mixtapes aren’t better then his actual album like another certain light skinned mixed rapper who’s name rhymes with Blake. lol

Also check out these 2 dope music videos by director BB Gun. Very simple concept but all around dope the way the camera stays with one continuous shot with all sort’s of ish happening as J walks and spits.

Slum Village- Villa Manifesto (album review/ preview)

Finally!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The new Slum Village album is officially out! Yes!!! This next to the new Dwele album has to be the most anticipated album for me being big fans of both and Detroit music period.

This album is very special to me given the loss of the 2 original member of Slum Village. J Dilla passed in February 2006 from his long fought battle with Lupus. Baatin passed just last year to a still unknown death because the family didn’t want to release it but we do know that he was diagnosed with schizophrenia and struggled with emotional problems. I’d hate to believe that he took his own life because the day of his death he was schedule to perform with Elzhi and T3 in Canada for the Villa Manifesto album but wasn’t able to cross the border due to past legal problems.

Listening to this album I got a ton of mixed emotions. It’s super dope to hear an album after all these years with all the members together but sad to know that 2 of the greats from the group are really gone. Baatin managed to finish majority of the album prior to his death and let me tell yall he gets it in on this one! I think this is one of his greatest pieces of work by far because he spits and sings like I didn’t even know he could. The video below is one of my favorite tracks that Baatin spits/sings called Actin Normal directed by Dwele that didn’t even make this album! Dope video by the way Dwele.

My only complaint is that he didn’t spit in his second language like he did on prior albums. Though I didn’t understand a word he was saying it sounded dope as all hell! Aside from Baatin’s performance on the album T3 and Elzhi also represent as well on the lyrical tip showing everyone in the states what Detroit music is all about and in my mind the dopest music right now all around, and I was born and raised in Cali and I’m saying this. All around the album is a good piece of work but I expected much more from Slum being that this album is so monumental along with the time it took to put it out. I wanted Fantastic Vol.3 on steroids!

There’s only 12 tracks on the album out of the possible 20 they could had which they’re past masterpiece Fantastic Vol 2 did. And for those that see 13 tracks in the track listing I didnt #8 Dont fight the Feeling featuring Dwele because its an instrumental with Dwele singing a repetitive hook! So much for a super Dwele heater feature like Tainted : o ( Hell there were 6 tracks on the “Villa Manifesto LP” album they put out last year in December (online only) that was supposedly suppose to give us a taste of the real album to come yet none of the tracks on the LP or on the official album. Bad marketing in my mind. I’d of been more satisfied waiting for one solid/ full album. My other complaint about this album is the lack of J Dilla’s presence. He has soooooo many tracks out there that haven’t been heard that only Slum would have access to as well as dope unreleased vocals that weren’t used. I wanted to give this album 5 cartons so bad but can’t with the above said.

Get up with a Legend

Getting two top notch talents to collabs on a project is not easy. But when it happens, we are all in for a great project. Sitting here still listening to Nas and Damien Marley’s project together, Distant Relatives, it makes me want more artist to join as one to give the fans something special.

One of my favorite rap groups The Roots, has joined up with a multi-talented singer in John Legend to present to the world, Wake Up!

There are so many endless possibles to this project. I’m happy to see these two super talents push aside their ego’s and produced a cd together. From the early reviews, this has the makings of a classic disc.

September 21st is the date to remember. The Roots and John Legend are giving the world an early Christmas present.
