Exclusive Bilal Interview

Well family, you heard right, we were blessed with the opportunity to get an exclusive interview with Bilal.  We were one of the few who were allowed to get a sneak peak into whats been up with the brotha and what he has in store with his latest release “Airtights Revenge.” I wont bore you with the shenanigans.  Lets get to the interview…

SOULFIED:

We know that many transitions have been made for you, eventhough you’ve consistently given your fans a genuine sound.  It is what we have come to expect of you.  What changes, if any, would you say took place between Love For Sale and Airtights Revenge

BILAL

This album is more electronic.  Its so much more.  The style of writing and everything was done much differently than previous albums.  From the ground up, the goal was to do landscaping with sounds, so I used a lot more sounds and effects than previous albums.  It is a real progressive album.

SOULIFIED

Tell us a little about Airtights Revenge, what is the meaning behind it and what brought it about?

BILAL

The meaning behind it… It basically started out fast.  Things were moving real fast, and then you know, my album ended up getting shelved.  I was off the label, then there was contracts and all this other bullsh*t.  The silverlining… then I started to see the sunlight come in.  Some people felt like the project I was working on was dark and some people weren’t understanding what I was doing – where I was coming from.  (slight laugh)  Then someone came up to me and told me that this album was the greatest soul record they ever heard in in their life.  I mean, when you get these types of statements, you know, its just.. (satisfying laugh).

So I started to tour and it was like I had an album come out!  The Revenge was what made me who I am today.  It made me stronger.  It made me better.  It made me more of a blues singer, which is what I had always wanted to be from the beginning.  But now I’m more of a blues singer than ever.  Its like some 5 Heartbeats type sh*t. (we both share a laugh).

If I could do it all over again, I wouldn’t change a thing.  I didn’t know any of this would happen, but it did, and everything happens for a reason.

SOULIFIED

So we heard, September 14th.  Is this official?  Is there any significance in the date?

BILAL

The album will definitely be released on the 14th.  Theres no siginificance in the date.

SOULIFIED

Robots is crazy!!!  I personally feel that it would make a great single…  Have you decided on which song will be the initial single?

BILAL

The single will be Restart.  We did a few videos, but the single will be Restart.  I don’t really do singles.   I don’t really get into putting out singles because to me the whole album is hot.  I just go with what feedback I get.

SOULIFIED

What you’ve done for yourself up until now has worked.  Do you plan on going more mainstream?  What direction will your career go?

BILAL

Man I just want to make good music.    I just make music.  I do what I love, which is making music.  I’m not into formulas or anything, just making good music.  If it goes more mainstream then so be it, but I’m gonna keep doing what I love to do.

SOULIFIED

From the feedback I’ve gotten, people want to see more of you.  Where can fans see you performing, or hear you these days?  Do you have a blog or youtube channel?

BILAL

Twitter:  @bilal_oliver

That is the best avenue because I load my videos on there and talk about upcoming shows and things like that.

SOULIFIED

I dont want to get too personal, but the ladies want to know… Is there a Soul Sista on the scene?

BILAL

(brief silence) Hello! – the phone started breaking up – He chimes back in “I’m not doing this on purpose!” (brief laugh)  I do have someone special in my life. (You’re referring to music right…?) (another laugh) Actually, I am in a relationship. ….yeah.  I’m in a relationship right now.   I’m married. (aite aite! I’m not gonna get too much deeper into that. ) (more laughs)

End of Interview

We had to disconnect after that question, so we closed up.  There is so much more I wanted to ask him, as it relates to the details about production and the rest of the Soulquarians.  I also wanted to include questions from some of his fans on our Soulfied twitter page but there just wasn’t enough time.  I’m sure this does wet your appetite though.  This album is looking very promising.

All in all, the brotha seemed very motivated and extremely excited about Airtights Revenge.  I listed below, a few treats that are sure to keep you excited about this one.  Send Bilal a tweet or something to let him know that we appreciate the exlusive interview at soulified.com.  Again, his twitter page is bilal_oliver

Wyclef For President!

President of Haiti that is. It’s offical yall! The Grammy winning MC, singer, producer, father and activist *catches breath* Wyclef confirmed the rumors that he will in fact be running for office via CNN’s own Wolf Blitzer. As you watch this interview you’ll see that Wolf goes hard on Wyclef with the questions as he has with any political figure on his show and Clef hold his own like a champ.

httpvh://www.youtube.com/watch?v=41a0FYJbQXo

httpvh://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lawL8Ku0jrs&feature=channel

Actor Sean Penn is pretty skeptical of Clef running for President and puts him on super blast in this interview shortly after his announcement

httpvh://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a6UK8lf6o3c&feature=channel

His early start at a presidential campaign is very reminiscent of Obama’s in the sense that he’s the under dog in this race with not having any sort of political background. Clef even mention’s in his interview with Wolf that he plans to follow in Baracks footstep’s with his campaign by doing a lot of what Barack did as far as hitting the internet strong and using his connections/ relationships to raise money. I believe Wyclef has a great chance at winning. The people of Haiti love and believe in him. He’s all ready the ultimate inspiration to his people being born and bred in the slums of Haiti and coming out of it the successful person that he is today never forgetting his roots. And dammit if Arnold Schwarzenegger’s punk ass can be the Governor of California then Wyclef should have no problem at all being President of his born Country.

Hey Clef! I have one hell of an idea to add to your campaign! Remix you “If I Were President” single you know by taking out the assassinated part and making it Haiti friendly lol

Wyclef Jean- If I Were President

httpvh://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9pq_3OheqzU

I back Wyclef in his campaign 100% Haiti need’s change just like we needed change. Plus the picture I took with him below at his show that my sister and I opened up for will be even extra special! “Yeah that’s me with the President of Haiti yall!” lol

Lil Wayne Calls in Live From Rikers Island!

We all know that you don’t have to actually go to prison to know that it sucks major ass to be in it, or know the crazy ish that goes down in it. And if you have no clue watch the HBO series Oz lol What we dont know is what prison is like for Lil Wayne? He’s been locked up at Rikers Island since March 2010 for possession of weapons and is set to carry out a year sentence or 4 months shy of a year is Weezy is on his best behavior. It’s been 5 months since then and no real word or news from Weezy until now.

Funk Master Flex recently got the chance to interview Wayne live from Rikers on his radio show and asked him the questions some of us are dying to know like…

  1. When are you getting out?
  2. Who would be the first artist you’d want to record with when you get out?
  3. How can fans write to you?
  4. What music are you listening to while in Rikers?
  5. Whats does a  day in Rikers consist of?
  6. How’s the food?
  7. What do you plan on doing differently when you get out?
  8. I’m Not A Human Being EP?
  9. Carter 4?
  10. How often do you and Drake/ Nicki Minaj talk?

What question’s would you ask Weezy? Let me know in the comments section down below. I know a few I’d ask are… Have you dropped the soap? Who does your braids now? Are you writing down your lyrics now so you remember them when you get out? lol

P.S. Free Weezy!

John Legend’s little nephew + wack supervision= Broken Grammy

*announcers voice* “And the Ass Whooping of the Year goes to… *drum roll*… John Legends little nephew!” *applause*

So apparently John’s little nephew was at his apartment and who ever was suppose to watch him wasn’t watching him good enough because he some how managed to get a hold of one of Uncle John’s prized possession’s which was his Grammy that he won for 2005’s Best R&B Album  “Get Lifted.”

BAM!!!!!!!!!

John was actually pretty cool about the messed up situation as he’s joked about the situation on his @JohnLegend twitter page…

A lot of John’s followers on his twitter agreed with me that his nephew needed some type of discipline for the big break. “It was truly an accident,” he responded. “I’m just gonna have to nephew-proof my apt. a little better.” Apparently John’s messed up situation caught wind to the Award show via Twitter as he received a tweet from them saying

@TheGRAMMYs “Don’t worry, we can send a replacement GRAMMY Awards to you.” John later jokingly replied “The Grammy’s twitter response was the bailout plan his nephew needed. Plus, he still has five other Grammys — no sweat.” I for one would still whoop that ass. lol

What would you guys do?

Fresh from the Fridge: J. Cole- The Blow Up (mixtape/video)

Whats up Soulified Nation?! Jay-z’s protege and first signed artist to his label Roc Nation is finally above ground in the mainstream limelight with his two singles “Lights Please”  and his most recent single “Who Dat.” So I’m hitting yall with some new J. Cole heat to get you by till his album “Cole World” drops October 26th of this year. Expect production from Kanye West, No I.D., and Pharrell just to name a few.

I’ve been a J.Cole fan ever since he dropped his first mixtape “The Come Up” in 07 and his second “The Warm Up” in 09 which were both solid mixtapes that felt like album’s. The Blow Up, though not an official mixtape made by J. Cole is solid like his past two with great production, lyrics, new material off the upcoming album and unheard past tracks. And one of the most important things to me in a mixtape…no annoying ass DJ’s f’ing up the mixtape with shout outs and plugs. YES! Let’s just hope that his mixtapes aren’t better then his actual album like another certain light skinned mixed rapper who’s name rhymes with Blake. lol

Also check out these 2 dope music videos by director BB Gun. Very simple concept but all around dope the way the camera stays with one continuous shot with all sort’s of ish happening as J walks and spits.

Goodbye Alicia Keys… Hello Alicia Beatz!

*Swizz Beatz voice* “It’s wedding time!” Alicia has finally married her long time boyfriend since 2008, “rapper” and record producer Swizz Beatz during a very small and private ceremony on the Mediterranean Sea in Italy this Sunday (August 1st). The 29 year old Alicia who is currently pregnant with her first child from Swizz walked down the isle in stunning cream Grecian-style dress showing off her little baby bump as gorgeous as she want’s to be. For the record this will be Swizz’s 4th child making Alicia his 3rd baby mama. Now thats a catch!

Since I wasn’t invited to the wedding due to the secret relationship Alicia and I had before Swizz *tear drops* I managed to find some photo’s of the wedding for you guys to view. I still love you Alicia!!!!! lol : o )~

Alicia and her parents

Beatz son Nasier latched on to Step Mom to be Alicia Keys and father Kasseem Dean aka Swizz Beatz

Alica and Swizz ready to tie the knot

Alicia throwing up the bouquet. Wonder who caught it. Hmmmmm

Swizz and 1st born Nasier

This seemed to be the weekend of big weddings as T.I. finally married Tiny after 9 years of being together in a star studded ceremony on Saturday (July 31) and the biggest of the 3 (why I dont know) was Chelsea Clintons wedding which was on Saturday as well which supposedly cost and estimated 5 million dollars to pull off!

Fresh from the Fridge: Nicki Minaj – Your Love (single/ video)

Now I’ll be the very first to admit that Nicki Minaj’s voice, prior songs, weird movements, fashion sense, and facial expressions bug the shit out of me. But I am not even mad at her for this track and the video to go with it.

I first heard this track on Power 106’s “New at 2” segment and was immediately hooked. The sample is dope. The beat knock’s. The hook is catchy. Her singing voice is on point (even with the auto tune). And the lyrics have a dope LL Cool J vibe with a female twist. Then MTV puts out the actual video as well as the behind the scenes for it and that was the icing on the cake! For those that don’t know I’m a second degree black belt so the Geisha karate themed theme of the video had me hooked from the start. And to top it off she has an actual martial artist and great actor; Michael Jai White as her leading man. The story line is nice with her being one of his students and falling for him as well.

My 3 complaints about this video:

  1. Kill like 90% of all the flowy artsy silk crap and have an actual Japanese style karate Dojo as well as the outside scenery.
  2. The karate choreography is boo boo.
  3. And for all of us fellow’s she covered ALL of her booty through out the whole damn video! lol

Official Video

Behind the Scenes

I’m going to go ahead and hook all my people up with a few options for this track to download. 3 remixed versions of the track. And Rick Ross’s is by far the best out of the 3. Sean Pauls has to be the worst. He kills the whole track shouting all outta place like Dj Clue. The original track. And the instrumental for those that want to sing/ spit over it or just like the beat and not Nicki Minaj lol

Slum Village- Villa Manifesto (album review/ preview)

Finally!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The new Slum Village album is officially out! Yes!!! This next to the new Dwele album has to be the most anticipated album for me being big fans of both and Detroit music period.

This album is very special to me given the loss of the 2 original member of Slum Village. J Dilla passed in February 2006 from his long fought battle with Lupus. Baatin passed just last year to a still unknown death because the family didn’t want to release it but we do know that he was diagnosed with schizophrenia and struggled with emotional problems. I’d hate to believe that he took his own life because the day of his death he was schedule to perform with Elzhi and T3 in Canada for the Villa Manifesto album but wasn’t able to cross the border due to past legal problems.

Listening to this album I got a ton of mixed emotions. It’s super dope to hear an album after all these years with all the members together but sad to know that 2 of the greats from the group are really gone. Baatin managed to finish majority of the album prior to his death and let me tell yall he gets it in on this one! I think this is one of his greatest pieces of work by far because he spits and sings like I didn’t even know he could. The video below is one of my favorite tracks that Baatin spits/sings called Actin Normal directed by Dwele that didn’t even make this album! Dope video by the way Dwele.

httpvh://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hFFkm97jrb0

My only complaint is that he didn’t spit in his second language like he did on prior albums. Though I didn’t understand a word he was saying it sounded dope as all hell! Aside from Baatin’s performance on the album T3 and Elzhi also represent as well on the lyrical tip showing everyone in the states what Detroit music is all about and in my mind the dopest music right now all around, and I was born and raised in Cali and I’m saying this. All around the album is a good piece of work but I expected much more from Slum being that this album is so monumental along with the time it took to put it out. I wanted Fantastic Vol.3 on steroids!

There’s only 12 tracks on the album out of the possible 20 they could had which they’re past masterpiece Fantastic Vol 2 did. And for those that see 13 tracks in the track listing I didnt #8 Dont fight the Feeling featuring Dwele because its an instrumental with Dwele singing a repetitive hook! So much for a super Dwele heater feature like Tainted : o ( Hell there were 6 tracks on the “Villa Manifesto LP” album they put out last year in December (online only) that was supposedly suppose to give us a taste of the real album to come yet none of the tracks on the LP or on the official album. Bad marketing in my mind. I’d of been more satisfied waiting for one solid/ full album. My other complaint about this album is the lack of J Dilla’s presence. He has soooooo many tracks out there that haven’t been heard that only Slum would have access to as well as dope unreleased vocals that weren’t used. I wanted to give this album 5 cartons so bad but can’t with the above said.

01 Bare Witness Ft. Babu
02 Lock It Down
03 Scheming Ft J. Dilla, Posdnuos, and Phife

Ms. Hill Returns

The thing about great artist, they seem to be weird or go crazy in there lifetime. You can say what you want, but it has to be something. With there problems or issues, they seem to forget to create new music. So anytime Whitney, D’Angelo or Lauryn Hill drop’s something new, that song seems to create hype for what the future can and should hold.

Lauryn has been on a up and down ride since her classic cd, The Miseducation. Most of her ride has been down, in the publics eyes. Her MTV unplugged project was panned by many. It was hard for people to except her going this sort of folk route. We were use to her giving us so much soul. To be honest, her unplugged disc was not bad.

Recently a few videos have surfaced with Lauryn sounding like the Fugees/Miseducation days. And the hype of her returning to top form is among us again. I can’t lie, I’m all in. Throw in the fact she is on tour doing the whole Miseducation album, Lauryn is on the comeback.

Today I found a new song of Lauryn’s. At the time, the only details we have is that the song is unreleased. I’m not sure if it is new or something that was a album throwaway. Whatever it is, I’m happy. It is good to hear Lauryn in all her glory, the way we remember her. Take a listen to this new song and comment. While you are at it, if you have not seen it yet, take a look at her performing Lost Ones a couple months ago.

Fresh from the Fridge: Eric Benet- Sometimes I Cry (single/video)

Eric Benet is officially back! And boy let me tell yall Eric Benet sings the shit outta this song! This is the definition of falsetto Dream! I honestly didn’t know Eric had vocals like this but then again if I were to mess up on Halle Berry like he did I’d probably gain this range myself. lol She’s definitely gotta be the inspiration for this track. Hell the title says it all.

Get up with a Legend

Getting two top notch talents to collabs on a project is not easy. But when it happens, we are all in for a great project. Sitting here still listening to Nas and Damien Marley’s project together, Distant Relatives, it makes me want more artist to join as one to give the fans something special.

One of my favorite rap groups The Roots, has joined up with a multi-talented singer in John Legend to present to the world, Wake Up!

There are so many endless possibles to this project. I’m happy to see these two super talents push aside their ego’s and produced a cd together. From the early reviews, this has the makings of a classic disc.

September 21st is the date to remember. The Roots and John Legend are giving the world an early Christmas present.

Rachel Brown’s Love, Life & Relationship

Website/Facebook/Twitter/MySpace/Blog

On this Sunday morning, I want to take some time to reflect on Rachel Brown.  The Soul songstress, who in 2007 released her debut album “Love, Life and Relationships” with Urban Music Group.  With that release she was in the spot light with her version of The Emotions “Don’t Ask My Neighbor”.   This album to me gives a great balance of the R&B productions, and a deep, rich soulfulness. Sometimes we get caught up in the new and freshly packaged music, and question the music and artists that don’t fit that mold.  In those, is where you find the gems and the talent that can last for years.  Rachel Brown is such an artist.

With “Love, Life and Relationships” you get fifteen songs that progress you through her thoughts, and transfer you to the sacred place that she visits every time that she sings.  This is an honor, and a chance that should not be missed.  Of, course the stand out song from the album is “Don’t Ask My Neighbor”, which can be seen below.  My favorites of the album start with “Weekend”, “Do What You Do”, and “Learn To Love Me”.

[audio: /05%20-%20Rachel%20Brown%20-%20Weekend.mp3]

[audio: 09%20-%20Rachel%20Brown%20-%20Do%20What%20You%20Do.mp3]

[audio: 03%20-%20Rachel%20Brown%20-%20Learn%20to%20Love%20Me.mp3]

After you’ve had time to absorb and make this album part of you, you will be pleased to know that later this year, she will begin on her second album.  That news really got my attention.  What I enjoy the most is seeing the transition from the debut to the 2nd album.  You learn a lot about the artist, and what direction they are going with their art. This transition should be quite exceptional.

I wish you were “Still” here

I recently took time to watch a video from one of my all time favorite artists, Eric Roberson. He just premiered the video for his song “Still” from newest last album Music Fan First. The video can best described in one word, powerful. It is more than a love song, it is about a lesson in life. I’m speechless even writing this. If you have not seen this, the link is below.

Gabbie McGee “Mississippi Daughter” Album Review

While driving into work today I decided to let Gabbie McGee’s new album “Mississippi Daughter” ride shotgun for my 1hr commute.

Almost immediately with “Walk with Me (Lord)” and “Afterwhile. Afterwhile” I was taken back to my childhood and I was suddenly sitting on my great grandmothers porch, getting my hair braided, playing jacks, and eating hersheys kisses. “It’s gonna be alright, Afterwhile.”

[audio: GabbieMcGee1.mp3]

It wasn’t deep, south Mississippi but it was Southern Virginia where I spent most of my childhood days and this album is the soundtrack to those memories. Memories of ice cold lemonade, hot days, little girls laughing as they played and a cool breeze under the shade.

Her lyrics also make you think of all the phenomenal women that have graced your life during that time with “Oak Tree”. I remembered my mami, my momma, my aunties, and my mother and the strength they’ve instilled me all these years.

[audio: GabbieMcGee6.mp3]

Its no doubt that Gabbie brings, with her sophomore album, spiritual, soultry, and smooth vocals. Her voice rings out lyrics that make you feel happy, carefree and full of hope from beginning to end, like when you were 10.

The last song on the album is “Run On”. I sat in my car, about to walk into my office and this song made my back straighter, and my stance 2 inches taller. “A New day is taken shape! – We gotta Run On!” and I did today and I will continue to do so.

[audio:GabbieMcGee14.mp3]

If you want to be spiritually fed and musically uplifted, then definitely add the beautiful Gabbie McGee to your collection. You will feel nostalgic and looking forward to your next Family Reunion.

Fresh from the Fridge: Estelle- #ialmostmadeamixtape (mixtape)

No your eye’s aren’t deceiving you. This is actually a mixtape made by Grammy award winning UK singer Estelle. With a cool Twitter inspired title Estelle hit’s you with a little bit of everything on this one from unreleased freestyles, remixes, and of course some new material that will more then likely be featured on her 3rd studio album“All of Me.” Throughout the album Estelle showcases her known vocalage and some what unknown rap skills which are actually very decent. She defiantly get’s her point across that she can bring much more to the table then her hit single “American Boy,” which is what her album title album “All of Me” revolves around that pretty much going to give every aspect of her talent to her fan not just what she’s known for.
