Fresh from the Fridge: Eric Benet- Sometimes I Cry (single/video)

Eric Benet is officially back! And boy let me tell yall Eric Benet sings the shit outta this song! This is the definition of falsetto Dream! I honestly didn’t know Eric had vocals like this but then again if I were to mess up on Halle Berry like he did I’d probably gain this range myself. lol She’s definitely gotta be the inspiration for this track. Hell the title says it all.

Get up with a Legend

Getting two top notch talents to collabs on a project is not easy. But when it happens, we are all in for a great project. Sitting here still listening to Nas and Damien Marley’s project together, Distant Relatives, it makes me want more artist to join as one to give the fans something special.

One of my favorite rap groups The Roots, has joined up with a multi-talented singer in John Legend to present to the world, Wake Up!

There are so many endless possibles to this project. I’m happy to see these two super talents push aside their ego’s and produced a cd together. From the early reviews, this has the makings of a classic disc.

September 21st is the date to remember. The Roots and John Legend are giving the world an early Christmas present.

Rachel Brown’s Love, Life & Relationship

Website/Facebook/Twitter/MySpace/Blog

On this Sunday morning, I want to take some time to reflect on Rachel Brown.  The Soul songstress, who in 2007 released her debut album “Love, Life and Relationships” with Urban Music Group.  With that release she was in the spot light with her version of The Emotions “Don’t Ask My Neighbor”.   This album to me gives a great balance of the R&B productions, and a deep, rich soulfulness. Sometimes we get caught up in the new and freshly packaged music, and question the music and artists that don’t fit that mold.  In those, is where you find the gems and the talent that can last for years.  Rachel Brown is such an artist.

With “Love, Life and Relationships” you get fifteen songs that progress you through her thoughts, and transfer you to the sacred place that she visits every time that she sings.  This is an honor, and a chance that should not be missed.  Of, course the stand out song from the album is “Don’t Ask My Neighbor”, which can be seen below.  My favorites of the album start with “Weekend”, “Do What You Do”, and “Learn To Love Me”.

After you’ve had time to absorb and make this album part of you, you will be pleased to know that later this year, she will begin on her second album.  That news really got my attention.  What I enjoy the most is seeing the transition from the debut to the 2nd album.  You learn a lot about the artist, and what direction they are going with their art. This transition should be quite exceptional.

I wish you were “Still” here

I recently took time to watch a video from one of my all time favorite artists, Eric Roberson. He just premiered the video for his song “Still” from newest last album Music Fan First. The video can best described in one word, powerful. It is more than a love song, it is about a lesson in life. I’m speechless even writing this. If you have not seen this, the link is below.

Gabbie McGee “Mississippi Daughter” Album Review

While driving into work today I decided to let Gabbie McGee’s new album “Mississippi Daughter” ride shotgun for my 1hr commute.

Almost immediately with “Walk with Me (Lord)” and “Afterwhile. Afterwhile” I was taken back to my childhood and I was suddenly sitting on my great grandmothers porch, getting my hair braided, playing jacks, and eating hersheys kisses. “It’s gonna be alright, Afterwhile.”

[audio: GabbieMcGee1.mp3]

It wasn’t deep, south Mississippi but it was Southern Virginia where I spent most of my childhood days and this album is the soundtrack to those memories. Memories of ice cold lemonade, hot days, little girls laughing as they played and a cool breeze under the shade.

Her lyrics also make you think of all the phenomenal women that have graced your life during that time with “Oak Tree”. I remembered my mami, my momma, my aunties, and my mother and the strength they’ve instilled me all these years.

[audio: GabbieMcGee6.mp3]

Its no doubt that Gabbie brings, with her sophomore album, spiritual, soultry, and smooth vocals. Her voice rings out lyrics that make you feel happy, carefree and full of hope from beginning to end, like when you were 10.

The last song on the album is “Run On”. I sat in my car, about to walk into my office and this song made my back straighter, and my stance 2 inches taller. “A New day is taken shape! – We gotta Run On!” and I did today and I will continue to do so.

[audio:GabbieMcGee14.mp3]

If you want to be spiritually fed and musically uplifted, then definitely add the beautiful Gabbie McGee to your collection. You will feel nostalgic and looking forward to your next Family Reunion.

Looking for Bilal (“Airtights Revenge” Album preview)

airtight

Bilal has been one not to follow behind others. And based on his new album cover, Airtights Revenge, we might get some of the old Bilal. Granted the Malcolm X pose has been done before. But Bilal throws his own twist with a microphone instead of a weapon. So far “Free” has leaked from the album.

It has been some time since he last released a project. In 2001 he released his debut “Love for Sale”. But his second project “Love for Sale” was supposed to be released in 2006 and has found it’s way in the bootleg world.

September 14th is the release date. Let’s pray that this date is not pushed back.

Listen to Free (full Version) below.

Zo! To Release a Sunstorm Upon Us

If you are like me, then you know that July is a hot month in the music scene. Coming up on the horizon is a project from a producer who has been putting it down on the soul scene for years. On July 27th the new project from Zo! “Sunstorm” will hit the shelves.

If you are lost to whom Zo! is you must have been hiding under a rock. From Zo! and Tigallo Love the 80’s to the Grammy nominated “Leave it All Behind” from Foreign Exchange. Zo! has been part of some of the best soul music released over the last few years.

“Sunstorm” will feature an amazing line up from Yahzarah, Phonte from Foreign Exchange, Eric Roberson, Jesse Boykins III, and Sy Smith. Sy is featured on the first single “Greatest Weapon of All Time”.  It is a nice laid back up-tempo jam to get the party started.

Just based off of the 2 singles released, “This Could Be the Night” being the other, “Sunstorm” is shaping up to be an instant classic. If you can’t wait for something from Zo!, download two of his FREE projects if you have not already, [Download not found] and [Download not found].

Pre-order the album and look for Zo! and Foreign Exchange to hit a city near you.

Review Of The Rural’s “Rural Soul”

Album: Rural Soul

Description: A soultry, nujazz, compilation of the very best of 16 years of the deep house sounds and a few new releases. The band is lead by DJ Andy Compton, with Marie ‘Tweek’ and a slew of other electic musicians. The talented base crew all from Devon, U. K. includes Saxophonist, Charlie Hearnshaw; Bass Player, Pete “Gurner” Middleton and Producer/Mixer, Bazil, a well known England DJ. The Rurals are often joined by other musicians on their label, Peng which released most of their recordings over the past decade.

geegee’s Review:

It started to thunderstorm as the first, a new track, “Save It” started to play. My original plan was to listen while I cleaned the house but by the time “So Sexy” came on I could no long ignore my background music- I had to sit down, light some candles and soak it all in.
The lyrics seemed to speak to me and say all the things I’d been feeling as I’d just ended a long term relationship. “Missing You” and “Ways to Love” (Emotional Feelings, 2003) took me there, and I fell in love with this cd!
Slowly I moved to the instrumental “Liquid” (10th Chapter, 2008) then got lost in the rifs of “Charlie Plays” (Messages, 2004). Soon after, up tempo tunes like “Just Fine and “Get it Right” started to thump from Nettle Soul, 2006, which reminded me of the bliss of a new relationship, when your heart is racing and you just can’t get enough.

I closed my eyes and thought of loves past, present and hopefully in my future as I swayed my hips to the deep house rhythms of “Fender Songs and “I’ve Travelled”.  My ears were soothed to “Pleading With You” and “Relax Your Soul” and immediately felt calm and at peace, like a bittersweet love affair.

This album took me all the way to midnight as the rain fell during “Smokey Jam” (The Rural Life, 2005) and the saxophone lulled me to sleep in “Fallin.”  This collection takes the listener thru 16 years of a melodic relationship with a band that fits so well together. Each song is a perfect balance of jazz, funk, house and soul.

4 Gees up! Definitely a “MUST add’ to your collection!

Iman Williams Is Everywhere and Growing

Blog 1/Blog 2/Facebook 1/Facebook 2/MySpace/Twitter

I have recently had the pleasure to listen to the music of Iman Williams.  She is an artist, singer and songwriter from Alabama, California and Atlanta.  I’m still baffled at the very talented artists that I hear, that don’t get the exposure they deserve and/or desire.  Her voice just comes out of no where and captivates you.  I’m very impressed, and am now truly a fan.  Her music is one a real music lover longs for, but rarely gets.  Enough of me flapping my gums, here are some samples of her music.

“Soulmate featuring Ab” is from her last EP “The Long Journey Back to Reality Pt. Deux“, that was released in January of 2009.  This is a very amazing song, and it’s only the first song that I have heard of Iman Williams.  It starts with just her soft and yielding voice.  Then her voice invokes a strength, and with that strength you really notice the piano. As it goes on, the singer Ab joins. Their voices together made me sense flashes of Prince, but then reminded me that this is something new and unique.

Soul Mate

“Float Away featuring Porsche” is from her upcoming album “Stupid Human Trick” that is due this May.  This is very nice song, that makes me want the whole album NOW.  It has a very relaxed feel, and has the power and beat to set the mood, in any situation.  Iman Williams was very kind to share a sampler from the upcoming album.  It is available for streaming.

Amy Serrata Gives Herself Freely

Website/MySpace/FaceBook/Twitter/YouTube

You may remember the Artist Spotlight on Amy Serrata last year.  Well.. if you do, you don’t have any reason not to pick up her debut album not, since she is offering it for free to her fans.  If you have never heard of her, then do yourself a solid, and pick it up, and listen.  You can pick up the album via Band Camp.  Here is a snippet of my review.

My favorite songs of the album that really show me what’s possible are “Lets”, “Teach Me”, and “In My Garden”.   The first “Lets” is upbeat, quirky enough, and I love the flute.  It keeps it simple to give her voice a chance to shine.  Second is “Teach Me”, which is the Soul that most can recognize very easily.  A touch of funk, and solid vocals really help this one go over the top.  “In My Garden” is just Pure Amy Serrata.  Nothing to mask her voice, no over powering instruments, just Amy.”

Erykah Badu Releases “Window Seat” Video

Erykah Badu just released the first video from her new album “New Amerykah Part Two (Return Of The Ankh)“, which will be available in two days.  The Video is for the song “Window Seat“, which is a great song, which is my favorite from the album.  The video is revealing to say the least.  Check out the video, and let us know what you think. Be sure to pick up your copy of the album on Tuesday.  You’re going to love it.
