Discover Candice Anitra’s “Bark Than Bite”

Website/MySpace/Facebook

I’ve been enlightened to the voice of Candice Anitra.  An artist from Brooklyn, New York that understands the meaning of being creative.  She has recently released her debut album “Bark Than Bite“.  This album is, plan and simple a journey of her expressions of creativity.  From the first song “Bad Taste”, to one of my favorites “Take Me”, which is the epitome of the  smokey and heavy with sultry sexiness vibe I love.  The simple chords, give her voice all the latitude it needs to envelop you in it’s wisps of mysterious soulness.  Yes, it’s like that.  Then moving on to “Too Much Woman” gives us something similar, with a touch of a astral vibe.  This is the album, that makes me want to drive through some random rainy city at 2:00am, and just reflect upon my day and life.   Then there are more upbeat and positive songs that round out the album to earn it a place in my daily rotation.

Candice Anitra has a refreshing, crisp quality that brings a new perspective to the genre.  This perspective is much needed, at this time that is being called the Golden Time of Soul.  With many artists releasing their long awaited projects this fall, and new artists trying to emulate those artists, that’s where Candice Anitra stands out.  Check out her video below, which is of the song “Objectify”.  Is a wonderful plea from one lover to the next.  Never had this proposition put in such a way. Enjoy.

Fresh from the Fridge: Willow Smith- Whip My Hair (single/video interview)

I remember way back when Will and Jada got together and started making babies and saying to myself…”those are going to be some good looking super talented kids.” Look at them now. Jaydan’s (12 years old) starred in 3 big blockbuster movies (The Pursuit of Happyness, The Day the Earth Stood Still, and The Karate Kid. Now his little sister Willow (9 years old) is next up to bat who actually starred in some films herself (I Am LegendKit Kittredge: An American Girl and Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa) but the films aren’t oddly enough isn’t what’s getting young Willow all the buzz these days…it’s her singing career!

When I first heard she had a song out I honestly didn’t take it serious at all. I mean come on! She’s 9 for God sake and signing. So I couldn’t even picture something like Lil Bow Wow did when he first came on to the scene with his ghost writers. So I gave her the benefit of the doubt and took a listen to her new single “Whip My Hair” and I was very shocked. This shit bangs! The track has a dope beat, very catchy hook as simple as it is, and the little girl can sing! What really impressed me even more is the interview she did with Ryan Seacrest down below. She looks just like Jada! Talks and carries herself like Jada! It’s a trip. She’s like a mini me lol And very mature, down to earth, mature, and wholesome. Oh and did I mention Jay- Z singed her to his new label Roc Nation?! Shot out to Azaleah aka Puertozillian! lol

Fresh from the Fridge: Diggy Simmons- Airborne (mixtape/ video)

Yes you read and saw it right! Rev Runs little son Diggy is now rapping and has his own mixtape out and brace yourself for this one… IT IS FIYAH!!!!

When I first heard little Diggy (now 15 years of age by the way) was rapping and had a mixtape out the first thing that came to mind is it’s probably wack as all hell like his brother Jojo’s material with his group Team Black out and more then likley is was kiddy crap that was ghost written by a hired rapper from his pops or Uncle Russel. I’m not one to not have a closed mind and not give something a try so I did and boy let me tell you all the above that came to mind went right out the window after listening to the first track where he does spoken word and I was immediately hooked to hear what else he would come with behind that and on every track he spits versatile bars. Diggy is def for real yall! What really confirmed the realness is this interview he did with Good Fellas Radio. Visually he’s def grown from last seeing him on “Runs House” and on top of that his vocabulary and what he had to say in this interview pretty much confirmed that he more then likely doesn’t have a ghost writer and Atlantic wouldn’t have signed him.

httpvh://www.youtube.com/watch?v=06RaqlknoMQ

Here’s one of the 2 freestyles Dig did to Nas Made You Look that caught the attention of labels where he eventually choose Atlantic…

httpvh://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WcM6p7pT4-o

What makes this a great mixtape for me is the fact that it doesn’t sound like a mixtape at all. Great production my fairly unknown producers. No Dj’s fuckin up the tracks. It has a great theme through out the whole album. Diggy’s versatility and content is nice. Nice features. And the tracks are just all around nice and all this is coming from a 15 year old! For all that I can’t help but give this album the score I did below. #2 is my shit! Even the Chris Brown feature where Chris sings and spits is dope. Download it and see what I’m talking about and let me know what you think here and be on the look out for Dig in the very near future. Shout out to my ninja James P. Morgan!

Bruno Mars: Doo-Wops and Hooligans (album preview/video)

The man behind 2 of the dopest singles of the year “Billionaire and Nothing On You” is finally ready to bless the world with his own singles in the highly anticipated album Doo-Wops and Hooligans coming out on my sisters birthday October 5th, 2010.

When speaking to MTV news on the story behind the album title Bruno explains… “I’m a big fan of doo-wop music. … That’s what you call your girl, your “doo-wop.” … On this album, I have records that women are going to relate to and men are going to relate to. So doo-wops are for the girls, and hooligans are for the guys.” So the big question is will Bruno’s album songs be equal to if not better then the 2 songs he produced and murdered the hooks on with B.o.B and Travie McCoys single? Cause in my mind and a ton of others he is those songs. And listening to both B.o.B and Travie McCoy’s albums those were the only 2 good songs on them. They prolly shoulda hired Bruno for the rest of they’re albums lol Looking over the track list I’m all ready not excited that he’s only going to have 10 tracks. I mean anything below 12 shouldn’t be allowed especially with all the songs artist record prior to go through and pick the best.  Listening to his first single “Just the Way You Are” I think Bruno has some kinda promise because its a dope single that would pull any female lyrically and vocally on demand. The video is ever doper.

Simple video with a super dope concept. Big ups to who ever came up with the idea to have the tape animated with the song lyrics. Damn it’s been a hot sec since I seen a yellow walkman. I know I’m not the only one who that one by Sony lol

Cilla K’s Voice is “Easy To Love” Video Release

MySpace/Twitter/Facebook

Ok, I’m going to have to get some therapy.  Here is Cilla K, a great voice and vibe that I missed, that should have been in my rotation since April, when her debut album “Fine Line” was released.  She recently also released a video “Easy To Love”.  The vibe that  you get from “Easy to Love” is just a sampling of the variety and range that you will experience on the album.  One quality that I enjoy the most, is her ability for her voice to meld with whatever genre she is crafting.  Take a listen.  I hope to have a album review shortly.

Trey Songz- Passion, Pleasure, Pain (album review/ video)

Happy Monday Soulified! How was everyone’s weekend? Got the new Trey Songz album last Friday and have been bumping it all weekend.

I gotta admit the album is a lot better then I thought it was going to be. Trey has definitely matured as an artist because the whole album is very well rounded. And for my dude’s that are looking for a good “beating/ panty droppin” album this is the one! lol I know I’ll def be putting this album on next time I knock some boots. lol Big up’s to Trey for this one. I appreciate it family. hahaha The track list is a little different from the one I posted a few weeks ago in the album sneak peek where all of you can still download and listen to the 6 tracks off the album highlighted below by clicking. The album’s very similar to Dwele’s W.ants W.orld W.omen album in the sense that he broke the album into 3 separate part with the parts relating to the album title’s 3 words. Though Trey’s words aren’t in the right order in his track list as they are in the album title I’m not mad at him for trying and doing it the way he did because it makes the album that much more interesting. Make sure to buy the album tomorrow (Sep 14th) when it drops.

The video for the new single off the album “Can’t Be Friends” and I’m feeling this video big time. It’s a simple concept but it gets the point and lyrics across. More artist should focus on feeling and simplicity when doing video’s because all the crazy graphics and special effects and shit aren’t needed. The song is dope as well cause I feel every word he’s singing on a personal level as I’m sure a lot of you are as well. This cut defiantly leads me to believe that his album will truly be the most personal to date.

Green Tea & Uncle Shecky Present The Dosage 2.5: The Crazy Eights Remix EP

Green Tea has released a new collaboration effort with Applejac. The new project is “Green Tea & Uncle Shecky Present The Dosage 2.5: The Crazy Eights Remix EP“.  If you’re a reader of Soulified and don’t know who Green Tea is, then you need a quick refresher course.  Our first spotlight was on her previous two albums “Have A Cup Of green Tea Dosage 1: Shades Of Green“, released in 2005, and “Dosage II: Choices” which was released in 2008.  We then covered her awesome “Beautiful Weirdo” Mixtape.  Each release was better than the last and really showcased her talent.

This latest project is with the talented Applejac aka Uncle Shecky. They took Green Tea’s 2nd album “Dosage: II” and used that as the base, and built from there.  They brought new life into those songs, not that they needed it, but made them fresh and giving you a reason them to put them back in rotation.  Check out the EP, and support a pair of talented independent artists.

Mad Late: Eric Roberson “Still” Video

Eric Roberson released his album Music Fan First in August of 2009, but still releasing singles and videos to support it.  You can catch my favorite of his videos so far. It’s the duo he did with Layla Hathaway. Back to this video “Still”.  I am loving the slowed down tempo, coupled with the action of the video.  Check it out for yourself. Enjoy.

Kem asks with “Why Would You Stay” Video

Kem has released his first video for the first single form his new album, Intimacy Album III.  His third album is an impressive collection of art.  I even had the opportunity to speak to Kem for an interview, and was blown away by his calm, smooth nature.  Those traits come across very well in this song and video “Why Would You Stay”.

Giovanca’s “Everything” From “While I’m Awake” Album

Website/Twitter/Facebook

One of my favorite European artists has released a new album, and video for her second single “Everything”.  The album “While I’m Awake“, her second album after  “Subway Silence“, was released a few months ago.  The reason why I enjoy her music so much, is that she has a very upbeat, positive yet soulful sound.  Sometimes in the the US we have too much deep emotion, and can weigh down the song or even the album.  It’s refreshing to have something a bit lighter, but not where it is reaching the R&B or Pop genres. Anyway, take listen to the video, check out the album and get hooked like me. Enjoy.

Interview With Teresa Jenee

BandCamp/Facebook/Twitter/Myspace

Recently I had time to correspond with the wonderfully unique, passionate and enlightening Teresa Jenee.  I have always heard her name, but it wasn’t until 2008 did I really pay attention and submerge into her world of genre breaking talent.  She is the epitome of the independent artist.  Her recent release of “Paint The Roses” and the “The Eklectic” album, she continues with that trend.  Enough of the chit-chat, here is the eye opening interview.

Soulified

As someone who became a fan in 2008 when I heard the TeresaJenee.EP and was amazed that I hadn’t heard this voice before.  At what place in your discography would you want a new listener to start, so they can get a fuller understanding of your music?

TeresaJenee

First of all, thank you! As far as my discog goes, I would want my listeners to check out the “Remember EP”. Many here in the states don’t know that I got my break overseas as a dance music artist with Osunlade. He made ME happen with his soul house remixes of “Remember”. Shout out to James Glasco who was the writer behind that incredible song. That EP was my beginning, my first successful recording out and I feel like it gives you another side of me.

Soulified

With the TeresaJenee.EP containing some songs that made it to The Ecklectic, do you feel that they are similar in expression of your creative voice?

TeresaJenee

Yes. Both projects are one in the same. The EP was my introduction.  It was my way of sharing the music with the outside in hopes that my sound would be embraced. So when the time came to make an album, I decided to extend the EP. I wanted listeners to have a connection from the EP days and enjoy some new stuff from “The Ecklectic” as well.

Soulified

Being a sucker for soft yet powerful voice, when I heard “In Your Eyes” I was taken by it instantly.  Did that song have a special meaning to you, since it seemed to stand out on the EP?

TeresaJenee

Well I didn’t write it about anyone at the time…and I was far, very far from being in love! Ha! All I can say is when I first played out the melody on keys and the words started coming, I thought it was just another pretty cool love song that I was writing. But after I recorded it, it quickly became my baby. I mean, all of my songs are like my babies, but when I listened to that song in playback, I felt like…wow.

Soulified

With an EP and album under your belt, what is next on your horizon for you and your artistry?  Also is “Paint The Roses” an indicator of what we can expect in a future project?

TeresaJenee

There is another release coming soon. I have the worst luck with release dates so I try not to put a date on anything anymore! But please be on look out in the months ahead.

As far as the sound of the album goes, “Paint the Roses” was just the beginning. It might be the most grounded song you will hear from me in the future.

Soulified

After following your music for while, I noticed you possess a pure desire/hunger to make music, share and perform it.  What is your ultimate goal with your music, that you would consider it a success?

TeresaJenee

I want a Grammy, even if its a nom and to get back into acting. Outside of that, I’m at peace being an indie artist….traveling on the road, meeting new ppl. Hell, I live for this!

Soulified

After hearing your recent release of “Paint The Roses”, which was produced by Tech Supreme, whom would you like to collaborate with in the future?

TeresaJenee

Wow, that’s a long list! I can’t think of everybody but, I would like to work with Roots, Passion Pit, Steve Aoki, Bilal, Brittany Bosco, Robert Glasper, Jazzanova, Mark Ronson, Andre 3000, I would really LOVE to work with Pharrell and N.E.R.D….their sound is KILLER.

Soulified

What is the main driving force for you to have such wonderful diversity in your music?  Is it a desire to test the boundaries of music, and what we expect from it?

TeresaJenee

Definitely. I’m a rebel child…always been. I’ve always disagreed with this whole “you have to stick to a sound so people can get you” notion. No, I don’t. I also get bored very easily even with myself so I’m constantly looking at my music thinking “How can I keep things interesting?”

Soulified

With the latest advances in Social Media and technology, do you think that independent artists actually are actually more in touch with their fans, and are able to get a purer high from their music than artists signed with major labels?

TeresaJenee

Hell yeah! Its the only way to be these days! This whole social media phenomenon is powerful. No longer is the control of this industry in the hands of a few suits in the corporate office upstairs. Now, every artist has just as much of a chance to connect to the masses as the major have through the years.

Not just that but to hear straight from the mouths of your fanbase is the most beautiful part of this game to me. No more guessing what the fans will love. Now you can talk directly to them…touch them…and they touch you back.

Soulified

One last question. What was the most important lesson that you gathered from making your debut album “The Ecklectic”?

TeresaJenee

It takes a village! I had the darndest time pushing the album because I thought I could do it all by myself. That was a huge mistake on my end. Now I have help and the next album release will be an easier process because of it.

Thank you for taking time to give our readers and us a deeper insight into you, your talent and your music.

Your welcome :)
