Usher- Versus (album review/preview)

Got my hands on the new Usher EP “Versus” set for release August 24th, 2010 so thought I’d bless my Soulified folks with a little preview of the album as well as my thoughts on it. For those that don’t know what an “EP” is it stands for Extended Play which is pretty much a short album that usually has 3 to 5 songs. Versus has 5 songs if you exclude “There Goes My Baby” which was on Raymond VS Raymond and the “Someone to Love remix” which is Just Beiber’s song.

My first thought of this album when I first heard it was coming out just 4 months after Usher’s 6th studio album Raymond Vs Raymond was that these tracks were the tracks that didn’t make the cut. Especially knowing that production for this album took place during 2008 to 2010. If that is the case I couldn’t tell at all because every song on this album is pretty dope. The singles “DJ Got Us Fallin’ In Love” featuring Pitbull, was released for the mainstream audiences, and “Hot Tottie” featuring Jay-Z was released for the urban audience but that shit isn’t urban to me at all. I mean yeah Jay-Z is on it but the song to me is boo boo. For one who the hell drinks hot tottie? Or for that matter who know’s what a hot tottie consist of? lol Of all drinks he could describe a woman as he choose that. And didn’t even spell it right (Toddy). lol

“Lingerie” is probably my favorite track on the EP. It has a grown ass, sexy up tempo vibe that goes into a dope Michael Jackson type vibe every time its about to go into the hook. And I happen to be a “freak for sexy lingerie.” hahaha Anyways enjoy the preview and download’s and make sure to get the album. Oh and here’s the “There Goes My Baby” video for those that havn’t seen it and love this track as much as I do. Not so much loving the video though. Usher seems to be feeling up on the concrete wall he’s singing against more then the love interest in the video. There not feeling or grown and sexy in it at all. What do yall think?

But till then Black Milk’s speaks a little bit on the album and I am of course hooking yall up with a few singles and a preview of the album art work as well as the track list. Fresh from the Fridge: Dirty Money featuring Drake- Hurt (single)

I’ve had this single in my “exclusives vault” for a hot sec and it is by far one of my favorite singles. Lost count on how many times I’ve listened to this track and for the longest I thought it was a Drake single with a random singer friend of his. Come to find out it’s an official Dirty Money track off they’re new up and coming album  “Last Train To Paris.”

Puff’s singing is pretty damn decent on this track along with Drake’s harmonizing and bar’s towards the end. Nice beat. Love love love the hook. Super catchy, original, and I can relate to a time in my life where I loved someone more then I loved myself *tear drops* lol Dirty Money’s album is expected to drop in the fall 2010 sometime. Till then enjoy this single before the radio gets a hold of it cause I can guarantee this will be a track that they play out.

Dru Hill Inside and Out (The dirt, reality show, updates, 2010 album review/preview)

“Oh yeah I remember Dru Hill.” “Damn Dru Hill is back?!” “Dru Hill were the shit!” “What in the world happened to them.” Your thoughts were something like that right?

Those were just a few thoughts that crossed my mind when I did a little research on the group and I’m sure some crossed yours as well huh? So to answer those thoughts… yes they’re back. The new album is entitled “InDRUpendence Day” which is set to be released July 27th 2010. Yes they were the shit cause “Tell Me What You Want, 5 Steps, Sleeping in My Bed, and These Are the Times” were my cuts! I remember the Musketeer/ Man in the Iron Mask themed video like it was yesterday! lol Great video’s to the single’s.

So what in the world happened to Dru Hill? Wellllll let me break it down for ya…

Dru Hill Break Down (past present and future)

  • Founded in Baltimore, Maryland in 1992
  • In early 1996 Dru Hill (Jazz, Sisqo, Woody, Nokio) signed to Island Records.
  • Dropped they’re first self titled album shortly after in November which went gold.
  • Between 1996 and 1998 the group did 2 monster sound track singles. (Soulfood- Were Not Making Love No More and How to be a Player- Bad Mamma Jamma)
  • In 1998 the group dropped they’re second album Dru World Order which went double platinum and had the hit single How Deep is Your Love off the Rush Hour soundtrack
  • In April of 1999 during the music video shoot of Wild Wild West member Woody quit feeling a need to return to his gospel roots
  • Between 1999 and 2000 each member put out a solo album. Sisqo who went pop who blew the hell up with his “Thong Song” and other singles, Jazz a traditional R&B/soul album, Nokio a hip hop album, and Woody a gospel album.
  • In November 2000 all 4 members got back together and added a random 5th who I don’t even remember named “Scola” to work on they’re 3rd album entitled “Dru World Order.”
  • Dru World order was released in 2 years later in 2002 because of old beef with the group and bad chemistry in which Siqo put out his second album “Return of the Dragon” which didn’t do so good along with Dru World Order….SHOCKER!
  • In 2008 the 4 original member’s ditched the Scola because having a 5th member was messing with they’re money as they say and began a reunion tour with Tony! Toni! Tone!, Bel Biv Devoe and Keith Sweat.
  • Then on March 6, the group appeared on WERQ, a Baltimore radio station, to promote their reunion live on air and this happened..

httpvh://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4toUG-tZItU

  • The group held a contest in their native Baltimore for a replacement for Woody, settling upon a new singer, Antwuan “Tao” Simpson.
  • To boost the “New Dru Hill” Keith Sweat come up with the very unoriginal idea to put the members in a mansion to live together and film every moment of they’re trial’s and tribulations to gaining stardom again. I saw a few commercials for this on BET a while back but apparently BET dropped the show and some random channel called Centric that I never even heard of picked it up. The first episode aired on June 28th 2010 which I watch online a few minutes ago here… Keith Sweats Platinum House

The reality tv series has a very low budget scripted feel to it. Especially when Keith Sweat is sitting in his chair setting up the scene’s. I’d honestly prefer him to “whine” a song as much as that hurts me to say. lol The new member Tao says that he’s brings a new young energy to the group but by the look of him he’s seem to look the oldest out of them all in my mind. Jazz gained a ton of extra pounds but still can sing all of the ass he gained off. Sisqo looks like an out of shape woman. Nokio out of all the member still looks the same and seems to be in great shape. Big ups to him for still keeping it together.

Now onto the album review. InDRUpendence Day.

1. Shut It Down 3:51
2. Do It Again 3:40
3. She Wants Me 4:04
4. Whatcha Do 3:47
5. Below Zero 4:09
6. Cant Stop 3:39
7. Remain Silent 3:48
8. Makin Luv 4:27
9. State Of Emergency 3:43
10. Back To The Future 3:50
11. Love MD 4:06
12. Away 4:45
13. Rule The World 4:14
14. Bonus Track 1:31
15. Bonus Track 1:36
16. Bonus Track 1:33

I’m diggin the album cover. Nokio’s hair style is pretty dope and out there. Jazz seems to have slimmed down since the recording of the show. Sisqo looks more like a man with some facial hair and the hat on and Tao well… he still looks like they’re old manager. lol As for the album I seriously had high hopes for it with all the dope tracks they’ve hit us with but unfortunately the album is boo boo yall. Horrible production. Not a solid single for the radio which is probably why none of us have heard one. No quality ballad. Bad quality and lyrics. And they had the nerve to remake “Rule the World” and rap on it after Dwele murdered that remix! And on top of all this auto tune is very evident through out the album and T Pain isn’t a feature yall! The bonus tracks shouldn’t even be on there. #14 is some random “carni rock track” #15 is a rock remix of “How Deep” Jazz’s vocals are the highlight of this whole album. My suggestion to him is work on a quality solo album cause there’s a big spot open for that Big Teddy Bear tpye of singer with a strong voice right now. With the lack of promo for this album and whats on it I doubt it is successful at all.

Here’s a few of the singles and one that I thought was decent…

Fresh from the Fridge: Robin Thicke- My Life (single)

If your wondering why there’s a “Despicable Me” picture here it’s because they’re soundtrack actually has this Robin Thicke single on it. lol I was shocked when I heard the new’s too but apparently Pharrel is credited as a music producer and co-creator of the official music score for the upcoming animated Summer film which was another shocker to me. lol

Though it’s hard to try and find the relationship between this track and the movie without seeing the it, it’s a hot track none the less. With a dope beat produced by The Neptune’s of course and a very feel good vibe too it with a nice beat switch through out the song this is def a track to download and add to you Robin Thicke collection. Dwele-W.ants W.orld W.omen Album Review

I’m going to come out right and just that this album is a straight masterpiece yall!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Whats super dope about this entire album is how it seamlessly feels like 3 albums in one the way he’s splits each title name (Wants, World, Women) with the interlude first, then the songs that represent that specific title just as his super dope commercial’s did to hype the album. And I guarantee yall wont be skipping over these interludes like know we all usually do because they’re straight up dope! W.ants (1-6) are all about just that…Dwele’s wants in which he hits us with a full dope list in the very first track I Wish. The shocker track of this whoooooooooole album is Dodgin Your Phone featuring David Banner which we all heard a snippet of in his W.ants commercial. It’s a shocker to me because it’s nothing like what I expected from a David Banner track and most of all… Dwele spits on the track! Yes Dwele raps and he does one hell of a f*^%king job at it yall! Had me hella impressed and it comes out of know where when the beat all of sudden switches Timbaland style. I was sitting here looking at the track list features again thinking it was one of the many Detroit rappers that he’s friends with but at the very end of the track Dwele confirms that it is him in his last bar with mucho swag. Mad props to Dwele on this!

W.orld (8-11) are all about the current political situations were dealing with these days. The tracks are very reminiscent of Marvin Gaye’s views with “Whats Going On” especially in How I Deal and My People. My people is probably the one I have on repeat the most on my I Pod touch and I find myself through out the day humming and scatting the melody just like Dwele himself. lol

W.omen (13-18) is self explanatory. Dwele slows it down for us and focus’s on the ladies. I Understand is probably my favorite out of that selection and was one of the song featured in his W.omen commercial. I Wanna featuring Dj Quick was another shocker too me. I’d never expect those two to make a track together or even know each other but it’s very well put together with that classic funky Dj Quick production he’s know for with some witty bar’s to go with it. With that said enjoy the party all weekend long and drink up as much Dwele as you’d like and make sure you support him by going out and buying his now!

Aside from the W.W.W. there’s an exclusive live version of Angel, an interpretation of English pop rock duo’s Fears For Tear’s hit single Everybody Wants To Rule the World, a few older exclusive’s that I’ve never even heard, and the dope tribute Dwele did for Michael Jackson where he performed a very memorable MJ track recording each instrument piece by piece with his sampler from start to finish. You have to see it to believe it! True talent right there!

Fresh from the Fridge: Dwele- I Wish

More Dwele heat for your ears and your feet! Today I’m hittin yall with another single off his new album coming out on the 29th of this month entitled “I Wish.”

“I Wish” is a smooth up beat track you can bob your head to and just vibe too. On this one Dwele is keeping it real yet simple with the wishes that he has whether it be personal or political.  One wish in particular that stood out and actually had me laughing little was… “I wish that the Golden Child had a sequel.” hahahahah Couldn’t agree with him more on that one! I loved that movie! Classic Eddie Murphy right there!!!!!!

Fresh from the Fridge- The Roots featuring John Legend- Doin It Again

The baddest band in all the land are back with they’re forthcoming album “How I Got Over” set for release this month on the 22nd. And who better to hire for some smooth soulful vocal’s then the talent of John Legend. Today I’m blessing your ears with one of two feature’s John Legend is featured on entitled “Doin It Again.” If the title and lyrics on the track sound familiar it’s because they’re sampled from John’s “Again” track of his sophomore album “Once Again.”

Before you play this track be warned that it is straight FIYAH!!!!!! I swear it made my eye’s water. The beat is heat, Black Thought’s lyrics are on point as usual and I love how they sampled a live version of “Again” as opposed to the studio version because it flows perfect with the Roots live sound.

Here’s a great live video of spotlight sample I’m talking about…

And to all my Root’s fan’s here’s the album cover and tracklist for they’re new album…

Fresh from the Fridge: Cee-Lo Green’s “Georgia” and “I Want You” singles

Yes yes yall! More freshness from the fridge from yours truly and this time I’m bringing you 2 exclusive’s from Cee-Lo Green off his new album being released later this year entitled “Lady Killer.” This is a big deal for me being a huge Gnarls Barkley fan and it being 5 years since he last put out a solo album.

According to sources, Cee-Lo will continue to blend and mix the genres of Hip-Hop and Soul on the forthcoming release and it’s very evident with his first single “Georgia” which is pretty much an ode to the place he loves and grew up in a story book detail. After listening to this track Ray Charles would definitely be proud as it is very reminiscent of his version aside from the obvious title but with an up to date, soulful, Gnarls swag to it. And excuse my language but Cee-Lo sings the shit outta this track yall!

The second single “I Want You” is super exclusive and by far my favorite out of the two. I swear I’ve had this track on repeat playing in my Windows Media Player all weekend! So soulful, smooth, and just an all around feel good track. Whoever the woman is that he’s singing about (hopefully his wife lol) in this track has to be one hell of a catch with the meaningful lyrics he wrote up on this one.

Enjoy the freshness and be on the lookout for a few mixtapes I’ll be dropping in the near future.

Thee official track list! Featuring a full album of 18 tracks for our listening pleasure along with some really nice feature’s which Dwele isn’t to known for via his past album’s.

So far I’ve heard 3 of the 18 track’s. The first being  “Whats Not to Love” where you can listen in my prior post here. Track #2 “I Wish” that I’ll be showcasing fresh out the fridge later this week for you guy’s. And last but certainly not least track #8 “How I deal feat Slum Village which is by far my favorite track out of the 3 and probably out of the 18. Dwele actually made this single about 2 years ago during the Obama campaign which was his inspiration for the track. He made a super dope music video of the track because as he say’s “I was bored at home, shot a video, me and my tripod.” If this is the end result of his boredom then I hope he’s bored a whole lot more because I lost count on how many time’s I’ve watched this video due to how hot the track is as well as the all around dope simplicity of the video where he simply in his room singing to the camera on the edge of his bed with 2 of his clones playing the beat with an MPC and a keyboard. This video is nuts! You be the judge…

httpvh://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TZjpZAea-Cg

I guess he was feeling the track so much he decided to revamp it a little with the Slum Village feature where you can hear a taste of it in his “W.orld. Commercial” which I also posted in the link above. Let me know what track your looking forward to hearing and why from the list. And make sure to check the site on the daily for soul exclusive’s from myself and the rest of the Soulified crew.

Fresh from the Fridge: Kanye West featuring Dwele in “Power”

George Bush doesn’t like black people but Kanye West like’s Dwele as he feature’s him on his first single entitled “Power” from his highly anticipated RAP album “A Good Ass Job”…yes yall I said Raaaaap album! None of that auto tune singing crap this time around lol. Expect it’s release sometime around September.

Dwele insist that his contributions to Kanyes work are very minimal at best, despite their chemistry. “I got there [to the studio], and ‘Ye had an idea for what he wanted for the song,” Dwele told MTV News about “Power.” “So that’s all his creation. Pretty much all I did was my thing: I added harmonies and lent my instrument for the joint.”

Listening to this track it is very evident that Dwele’s contribution to the track is very minimal as he blesses the track at about 3:46 into the almost 5 minute track highlighting the bridge. Dwele sings: “I’m jumping out the window/ I’m letting everything go/ I’m letting everything go.” The track is super hot and bumps with a dope sample by British rock band King Crimson’s, but I would have loved to hear more Dwele on this one as I would have loved to hear more of him on they’re last colabo “Flashing Lights.”

Listen and download the track below and let me know what you think of it.

Dwele W.ants.W.orld.W.omen.

After a long 2 year wait and some main stream success with his Mc Donalds Mc Café commercial “bah da bah bah bahhhhhh” as well as a huge feature on Kanye West’s “Flashing Lights”. Dwele is now officially set to drop his 4th studio album entitled W.ants. W.orld. W.omen. (W.W.W.).  The album will be set for release this month on June 29th, following his last masterpiece of an album Sketches of a Man.  Which included the single “I’m Cheatin,” and my favorite single “Vain” which I’m bumping write now as you read on.

To further explain the title of his album Dwele show’s off one of his many other talents with these 3 commercial’s representing the 3 W’s that he directed/ produced. I lost count on how many times I’ve watched these commercials because they are straight genius by the way he advertises each “W” word, while blessing our ear’s with a taste of a single off the album towards the end of the commercial. The W.orld commercial is by far my favorite showcasing the hot single “How I Deal” featuring T3 from Slum Village.

W.orld.

W.omen.

httpvh://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HFmQSQ9CFLE

Dwele explains that the “W.W.W. is separated into three sections to represent different aspects of himself as an artist.” I can’t wait for this album to drop because Dwele has yet to let me down. From the singles I’ve heard so far the album will have a little bit of everything on it from soul, jazz, hip hop, to R&B. Expect features from Slum Village, DJ Quik, David Banner, Raheem Devaughn, and Monica Blair.

The first single off the album is entitled “Whats Not To Love.” You can listen to the track for your listening pleasure below.
