Donell Jones- Lyrics (album review/ sneak peek)

“Donell Jones has a new album?!” Those are the words that came to most of your minds when you saw this post right? Well it was for mine when I found out he had an album and I gotta say…It’s about damn time Donell! Only took you 4 years if you don’t count “The Lost Files” album in 2009 which was pretty much lost in music world. lol

So what’s Donell bringing on this album? “This album right here is, to me, the best so far,” says Jones. “I know a lot of artists say that, but I really feel that way. This is one you can play from beginning to end. I like to give a message in the music and I think that with this particular album, I really went into depth about certain situations we find ourselves in. I named it lyrics because from the very start of my career, that’s what I’ve tried to build on, writing strong lyrics and making sure that whatever I put out there, people can understand.” That’s some pretty big and confident talk considering his 1999 platinum selling album “Where I Wanna Be” is my all time favorite and in my mind a flawless album from start to finish. Hell my wedding song is on that album and I’m not even married yet. lol

Listening to the first two tracks right off the bat I can say he’s not off to a good start “rap singing” on the #1 The World Is Yours with way to much talking in the beginning of both tracks totally killing the it for me like a mixtape dj basically explaining how he’s back and the R&B needs him.  He even has his mama talking on #2 Your Place. Ewww. His first and probably only single off the album #3 Love Like This is a chill track with a decent video till Donell takes his hat and glasses off. lol Whoa! Donell got dome!!!! And I’ve seen prettier love interest in Walmart.

“Love Like This”

The talking continues on track 4, 8, 9, 10, 11, and 13! Just sing Donell! Your killing the songs. We don’t need introductions! Speaking of #10 You Can Burn Donell introduces one of his first artist signed to his “record label” Candy Man by the name of Breeze who’s a female singer that can’t sing worth a damn. *shakes head* The album as a whole is a big disappointment to me because I was really hoping Donell would back his words and bless us with an up to date “Where I Wanna Be” but it’s far from that. The production is boo boo especially the uptempo clubby ones. The content isn’t something I don’t wanna hear like strip clubs, tapping married women and sneaking out the Back Door, and ruining a girl life he dated that didnt want to be with him via Blackmailing her for money who’s getting married. Unnecessary auto tune (#5). There are no high notes at all! It’s pretty much soft spoken singing through out. You know an album is bad when Young Joc the best thing about it. Real spit.

      Black Milk says:

lol Thanks for the love on the review Rhythem89. I always try and keep it real as possible and am very dissapointed with the album. At least I still have his good stuff to play when I need the “Real Donnel” though lol

    Tee says:

On the whole, from what i have heard of the previews of most of the tunes, there does not seem to be any unforgettable tunes on there, which is a shame. Out of the tunes i have heard in full, Love like this and Your place, are good tunes that i enjoy hearing, but not stunning. Stripclub im sorry to say is rubbish, more of an attempt to follow the crowd rather than set the pace. Been waiting for this Donell album a long time, im hoping the slight previews of the other songs have not given me the full or real picture.

      Black Milk says:

Yeah Tee the whole album is boo boo. Don’t waste your money on it. Just buy “Where I Wanna Be” if you dont have it all ready and enjoy that album cause that was a masterpiece.

Take the cd and use it as a coaster and while your at it take a class on what a quality album sounds like. lol

You are right on the money with this review. As a long time fan, I can vouch for 90% of all of Donell’s work up until this album. He totally blew it on so many levels here.

    • Black Milk
      Black Milk says:

Thanks for the love and backing me up on this one Paul. Def blew it. You would think after being gone that long and having so much time to make this album and bring back that R&B sound like all us true R&B heads have been missing. Oh well. I’m just gonna bump “Where I Wanna Be” in memory of his career. lol

  4. Tenz
    Tenz says:

I have been a long time fan since his first album with “In the hood”. True most of the tracks are not that great, you have to give DJ credit for having his own label and this is his 5 album. All about the sex, back door remind you of his old joints, but for as long as he be out of the game it could have been better. But I will always buy DJ’s stuff without even hearing a track. He is still up there with Joe, R.Kelly, Jaheim, remember they had at least one bad album too. “Tenz”

    • Black Milk
      Black Milk says:

I’m sure Donell appreciates you Tenz and might even personally thank you cause he’ll prolly be able to track down the 2 people that bought it. Way I see it no matter how much I love an artist if his album is garbage I feel like he let me down and doesn’t deserve support. People these days want they’re monies worth and with him having his own label that shoulda been all the more reason for this album to be dope with all the freedom he had.

I am a true Donell Jones fan and I have been feinding for this cd like a swerve, seriously. I went to the store and got it as soon as I got off work and honey…I am so disappointed. :( I am with Tenz though, I will still always go out and cop the album but this sh*t right here, this sh*t right here Donell is trash!!! But I love you anyhow!

    • Black Milk
      Black Milk says:

LOL I take it you read my review a little late huh Nikita? It’s a sad day for Donell Jones. That for damn sure. I’d be surprised if this album goes “wood.” lol

Well Black I wasn’t going to take anybodys word when it came to Donell Jones LOL I had to hear for myself. I do like #3, #7, and #12 though, if that says anything? But honey, I hadn’t even seen the video but after I read your review, I got curious. The girl is wack LOL looks like a Celine Dion knock off…-I’m saddened :(

      • Black Milk
        Black Milk says:

Well will you take my word 6 years from now if he decides to put out another one? lol Liking #3,7, and 12 says that ya coulda saved $6 and just purchased those singles for 99 cent on itunes or Amazon. lol Hell I woulda sent them to you for a hug and a pack of Sour Patch Kids. hahaha Yeah Donell coulda found a woman off the street at the local mall badder then her. She must be hookin someone up on that set. lol

          Nikita D says:

I can’t even sit here and lie Black! Even after this I would still go get the next Donell album. My love for him is just that deep! LOL But yes I could’ve saved a few dollars by getting on Itunes and purchasing the tracks. However, after listening to the album I do like #2, My Place (i could do without his mothers words of encouragement though) and #4, Imagine that. That’s a whole 5 tracks!!!

            Black Milk says:

What’s love gotta do with it Tina? lol : o )~ It’s all good Nikkita. I respect your honesty. Like I said I still have “Where I Wanna Be” to enjoy all the way through when I want some quality Donell Jones. lol

  6. Squeaky
    Squeaky says:

I appreciate everyone’s honesty! What I don’t understand is how one can criticize an artist with many talents. Why all the negative comments. There will never be hardly any success amongst our people because some of us are always hating on each other. Don’t be mad at Donell because he’s doing what he love….support him and other that are out there trying to make it happen. If you want to be angry with someone…look in the mirror. There is someone for everyone out there. Who he choose to be with is his choice! Love should not discriminate. All I can say is some of you may like the album some may not but that’s ok too. At least he’s doing something positive with his life! Keep up the good work Donell!

    • Black Milk
      Black Milk says:

WTF? lol Squeaky? Come on Donell I know thats you under a false name dawg. Don’t be butt hurt cause your album is garbage. lol

Learn the difference between criticizing/ negative comments and keeping it real. Cause that’s all I do…KEEP IT REAL. The truth must really hurt. Out of the thousands of hits on this post no one has yet to say anything good about this album and for good reason and I gave more then enough praise on your “Where I Wanna Be” album which is a masterpiece and still get play in the car and during Mr. Nasty Time. lol Thanks for taking the time to read my review though “Squeaky” it’s much appreciated.

Sorry booboo you’re wrong on this one. My brother would probably care less about your review. You’re only one in a million. I’m aware that he can’t please everyone. I’m just saying…your words are harsh and discouraging. There’s nothing wrong with keeping it real but in a positive way. I understand that people who speak so rudely have been hurt or either abused in their past and the only way to make themselves feel better is to hurt someone else. That’s not good. Its cold and heartless. You are entitled to your own opinion and so is everyone else. I know the difference between criticizing/ negative comments and keeping it real and you are guilty of all three. I hope your keep it real character stays here online and not go home with you because if so, you’re going to affect a lot of people with negative ways. lol. thanks for the entertainment Mr Black Milk.

You watch way to much Dr. Phil Squeaky. When you get an actual psych degree like myself as well as the experience that I do in this game then attempt to profile me. I keep it real 24/7 and to those that can’t take the heat…well you know the rest. Oh know…thank you Squeaky your def the entertainment on this one. Can’t take the credit on this one. lol And your brother should care about this review because if he keeps doing what he’s always done then he’s going to keep getting what he’s always gotten. Let that marinate. lol

I think that the passion here is mistaken for hate. The reason people are so passionate about his new album is that, they care for Donell as an artist, and what he can bring to the table. based on his past work, his fans expect certain level of quality. Sometimes an artist changes direction, management or producers and the project doesnt come out as expected. Here at Soulified, we value, celebrate, and respect the artist and their work. We will also let them know in a respectful manner when their music isn’t up to the bar that they set with their previous releases. Thanks.

Co-signs this review all the way. I’ve been following Donell’s career since I heard Make You Real Good in 1994 on Eddie F’s compilation album. His first 4 albums in my humble personal opinion are classics. But this new album? This shit pissed me off, I’m appalled. We waited over 4 years for this? The whole album is horrible because Donell is so much more talented than this. I counted all the songs Donell has done that werent on his albums that I have on my hard drive, 37 songs! When I say I’m a fan, I’m a true fan, but I can not condone this shit. Even the 2 best songs Just A Little and All About The Sex cant hold a candle to anything he’s done in the past. Donell cant sing anymore, think I’m lyin, check out his live shows on youtube, you’ll see what I’m talkin bout. He cant really sing in the studio no more either where he can punch in as many times as he needs to get a note right. Donell is finished and it hurts me to say that, he has to come back ASAP with an album on the level of quality as Where I Wanna Be or Journey Of A Gemini, if not his career is over. Signed a let down fan.

Church! Thanks for keeping it real The One! I feel you 100% on everything. I knew I wasn’t the only one that didn’t notice in this album his singing level has dramatically dropped along with the content. Not a quality high note found and he doesn’t have a legitimate excuse like Whitney Houston’s drug use. Hell I bet the few people here like Squeaky and Sunshine that think were all hating and wrong think Whitney’s shit is still good. lol Thanks for the support fam.

Hmmm, Im gonna make this short and quick..Guess what? None of these negative comments matter bcuz guess what????? HE STILL IS SOLD OUT EVERYWHERE…. So no matter what u all think, everywhere even online retailers reviews are great… Soooooooo keep hating on go cop that wack ass Trey Songz album. He’s has a strong fanbase all over the world, he will be okay no matter what. That is all :)

Unless your actual “Sunshine” where you can actually be “everywhere” in the world where Donell Jones is you can save your comment. lol How is one going to hate when there’s nothing to hate on? Learn to use that term in the proper format mama. The comment’s and review you see before is called keeping it real. Try it sometimes and thanks for visiting the site. It’s much appreciated lol

You are welcome :) Im more than happy to visit your LITTLE blog…All Im saying is for you to say it’s boo boo is crazy. Even if you dont like the arraignment of the album, its straight BS for you not to be able to at LEAST give him his props on his writing. Everyone knows the Donell is an excellent writer to say the least. He wrote and produced damn near the whole album. So keep listening to the watered down R&B your probably listening to as we speak. Just so u know, I can gives 2 fuccs about a proper format on a non-major blog. For those of you who dont have the album, go cop it. Like I said, the reviews are great! See for yourself. Peace out Black Milk, wont be visiting this blog anymore. This whole post is just non applicable, seeing the MAJORITY feedback is positive. Wont even waist anymore time on this LITTLE BLOGGER. Just be on the look-out for the next album because I know deep inside your a huge fan xoxo-

Go cop a hug, learn some proper grammar while caring, and learn how to use the proper words in the right context…(waste) not “waist”. lol Your ignorance is entertaining. Thank you. I still have “Where I Wanna Be” so I’m good.
