Prince Releases Video for song “Baltimore”

The video for the single “Baltimore” was posted on Prince’s twitter account @Prince3EG. It’s powerful song that was released in May, before the tribute concert “Rally 4 Peace”, and is dedicated to the protests that followed the death of Freddie Gray.

An Interview with Conya Doss

Conya Doss was able to take some time out of busy schedule to answer a few questions about her and the recent release “Blu Transition“.  The album is great and gives fans the hit they need to carry on.  As a long time fan, I’m very pleased and now can’t wait for the next one. :)  Enjoy the interview. Album review is coming shortly.

Soulified: If you had 4 words to describe music, what would they be?

Conya Doss: Smooth, soulful, heartfelt, and raw.

Soulified: Why did you choose this time to act on your inspirations to create Blu Transition?

Conya Doss: It just came naturally, I do this for every record, all is just contingent on what I am experiencing during that given time.

Soulified: Who are some of your musical influences?

Conya Doss:Bonnie Raitt, Nina Simone, Stevie Wonder, Donnie Hathaway, Prince, Angela Winbush, Michelle N’Degeocello, list goes on and on.

Soulified: What is your favorite track off of the new album, and why does it stand above the rest?

Conya Doss: “Never Be The Same” because it speaks of my whole experience this past year with regards to the birth of my son Blu.  Life as I knew it will never be the same, in a great way of course.

Soulified: With the other people that worked with you on this album, who had the biggest impact?

Conya Doss: Rodney Jones, Myron Davis, Jayshawn, James Blaque, they all had something special to offer, with no one making an impact more than the other.

Soulified: How do you keep in balance the fight for creative control with the chance for major label success?

Conya Doss: It’s a constant struggle; I’d rather hold on to my creativity, I love music too much to compromise it.  However, it would be great to have “the machine” behind you.  An ideal situation would be a partnership, but that’s rare.

Soulified: Continuing with the previous question, how would you define success?

Conya Doss: When a supporter approaches me and tells me how much my music has inspired his or her life in one way or another, I have succeeded in reaching someone with my god given gift.

Soulified: Do you have a tour planned? If so what cities are on the list?

Conya Doss: Washington, Cleveland, Columbus, Toledo, Detroit, Birmingham, new york, and hopefully more to add.

Soulified: What tunes are currently in heavy rotation that you jam to?

Conya Doss: Anthony Hamilton’s album “Ain’t No Body Worrying” and all of Raphael Saadiq’s latest joints.

Soulified: Thank you for your time. Is there anything else you would like to tell our readers?

Conya Doss: Thanks for taking the time to listen to my music and visit my website www.conyadoss.com

Thanks Sweetlocs, for the great questions and your effort.

Memphis: A Tribute To Prince

Tribute To Prince

The second event to help fill your weekend, is A Tribute To Prince.  It’s being produced by Memphis Rebirth. Here is a snippet from their site, that best describes their  goal. “Memphis Rebirth Entertainment was conceived in 2006 with the dedication to restore music back to its original soul element and create unity among diverse culture through the concert series – Rebirth of Soul, which will be a scholarship benefit that will give assistance to high school students seeking continued education in Music and the Arts in an accredited college or institution.”

They are putting together this event, that features Karen Brown, Thomas Anthony, Preston Shannon and The Flow.  They will be performing classic Prince songs to give tribute to his legacy of great music.  Also they will perform a few songs to give respect to the passing of Michael Jackson.  More info on the artists is available here.

It will be held at the New Daisy Theater on July 11th Saturday at 7pm.  General admission tickets are $20 in advance, and $25 at the door.  VIP tickets include 3 course dinner (catered by DeJa Vu Creole Restaurant), VIP seating and two beverages are $45 per person.  You can purchase tickets at Memphis Rebirth’s site via Paypal. It sounds like a good time.  I am planning on attending.

Sade blessing us with new release?

Update (2-10-2010): For all Sade news click here.

Sade

Good morning. This is has been on my mind. Last Friday Soulbounce broke news of a letter from Maxwell to his fans. In this letter he asks his fans to buy Prince’s upcoming three album set, that’s being released March 29th @ Target. Also he mentions to buy Sade’s upcoming album. Before this, there wasn’t a mention or even a whisper about a new album. Now for the info.

  • There have been reports that Sony Music has confirmed this upcoming album, but there hasn’t been any links provided.
  • On January 16th, Sade turned 50!!!!! I can’t even picture this woman with a single gray hair or wrinkle. She just exudes a timeless beauty.
  • It has been 25 years since her debut album, Smooth Operator. I was 12 when I fell in love with her music.
  • Sade’s last release was Lovers Rock in 2000. So it will be 9 years between albums.
  • Even though she hasn’t released an album recently, her band started a group called Sweetback, and has two albums out.

In the past 25 years, Sade has made such an impact on Soul & R&B music.  You couldn’t listen to a”Quite Storm” session on the radio without hearing at least one song from her.  When you were setting the mood, in the 80’s you knew any one of her albums would seal the deal.  Even one of Prince’s upcoming album is going after that Sade sound.  Prince said, “We got sick of waiting for Sade to make a new album,” adding, “This music is nasty, but it’s not dirty.”

Check back for more updates.  As soon as I hear it, I’ll post it up.  Thanks.
